Walgreens (the drug store) has back to school kids backpacks that are pretty sturdy for 5 dollars each in boys and girls designs.

We had a local school supply giveaway that ran out of backpacks. I was thinking that Walgreens sell them every year and Walgreens would have been good place to get them.

I use www.pricematcherz.com every week to see what is on sale in three cities around us, all that the local Walmart will "price match."

We save around 20% off Walmart's prices and don't have to drive around to get the good prices.

I also have a small garden and that helps. Today I harvested tomatoes, eggplants, three kinds of peppers, onions, and basil.

When I have excess, I either give it away or freeze/can it.

Volunteer with a local farm. Barter your time, learn new skills. I've bartered for eggs, veggies, music gear, a tattoo, etc.

If anyone in SE Wyoming wants to barter their time for eggs (chicken or duck) and goat milk, I could use some help cleaning up after the animals. Or I can pay cash. If you are interested, send me a personal message.

You can freeze many 'tropic' fruits with simple washing/peeling. Peel and slice a banana, put in a container and they last many months in the freezer. Mango, soursop, pineapple, guava, berries etc all the same setup.

This kind of advice is helpful. Knowing how to stretch food is being frugal too. Freezer bags should be a weekly purchase and knowing you freezers limitations are essentials.

My little town doesn't have an Aldi's grocery store, but you can go to [link to www.aldi.us (secure)] and get their amazing coupon deals, then go to walmart and wm will match the prices. Produce prices are really a bargain compared to walmart prices. Good way to save some real money with very little effort. Great thread Phenn....

Get some chickens if you can. Lot of times you can find people giving away free chickens on Craigslist. I have a chickens and I have 15 dozen eggs in my fridge.

People give stuff away for free on Craigslist you can always pick up those items and sell it on eBay when I was unemployed I did this went to thrift stores bought stuff and we sold it on eBay made as much as $3000 a month

Don't forget you can pickle those eggs for when the girls cool down for the winter. Vinegar is cheap.
I wish I had more time so I could do even less.

I am still selling eggs here in NC for $2.50 a dozen. I have found the best way to shop is to stock up on just what is on sale each week. It really helps loads if you have a card for certain stores as well. Foodlion here in NC has their MVP card and you can go on site and add coupons to your card from the site. I usually buy what I have a coupon for that way if they have a sale on it.

If you can get eggs real cheap then freeze them in ice cube trays then place in baggies 2 cubes is one egg. And works great when you bake like I do.

Bulk items should be purchased at restaurant supply stores. I just bought 25 pounds of pancake mix for $17, and 50 pounds worth of sugar for $20. Put into Ziploc bags and stored in a cool dry place, they will last a long time.

Buy a still.... and ask your drinking buddies for their empty spirit bottles..... you save heaps....

oh, and grow your own backy if you smoke

both are fun

here in australia both are illegal of course, so i don't do it.... *cough*

here is what my new still would look like on the virgin cleaning run.... (if i had a new one, which of course i don't... *cough*);)

My dollar tree carries Progressive Lentil and Vegetable soup most of the time, and you can get a case for 12 bucks, put it in your shtf pantry.

I usually buy a couple cases when I feel like lugging it home.
