I just don't get it. Why do people have such a hard time switching computer OSes? Linux is free, solid, no ads, private, safe and easy to use. | |

You would really accept running Windows with viruses, popup ads, auto installs out of your control, no privacy at all, buggy. Just because you hate change? |

Because we already use a ton of professional programs that we've invested in, or are only available in Windows versions. We are a dealership for several manufacturer's products that require desktop software to access their portals. Windows only, sorry. People need to stop assuming the only thing people use computers for is Facebook. People who get ACTUAL WORK done have serious reasons for sticking with Windows. That said, we've made a rule here in our office: Windows 7 is our last version. We're switching to Mac OS after our Windows 7 machines become obsolete. That's because many of the programs we need are available in Mac versions. |

Since it can be a bit more involved, people give up because they have to spend so much time searching out answers. Here is what I need to make the switch: - A good quality multi-track recording software - An easy movie maker/video editor I have an image of Ubuntu on a USB drive, but after a failed go at Linux Mint Cinnamon (I don't think it's popular enough to get good tech answers on their forums) I'm a little hesitant. |

Then try a new app! Or maybe you don't even need that app after all. Fine, your work requires Windows. Ok, but why Windows or Apple at home? Especially just to surf the web! It's crazy! Same goes with Windos. 1) it comes with the computer 2) download it for free easily. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69922057 Why don't they switch? Too dumb. actually what Wine does is emulate. btw, with serious issues Right and it depends on the machinee/drivers, but works fairly well with many programs, if it doesn't boot to wondoze. |

I just use LINUX to access the web. Secure, safe, private and fast. If I need to use Windows, which is rarely, I open a copy that is NOT connected to the Internet at all to run Windows apps. Duh... |

It's a combination of awareness, herd mentality, convenience, and many people's resistance to learn how to do anything by themselves. Microsoft, Apple, and Google are so huge that they are the overwhelming majority of all tech sold. Together, they are effectively a monopoly. If you walk into a store to buy something you literally won't see anything else. Out of sight, out of mind. I held on to XP for over a decade until my last laptop's processor and memory limits (which still works) were just too slow to keep up with the screaming increase in processing and memory demands of newer and newer things. my current laptop is Windows 7, but there is no way in hell I'm going to let Microsoft 10 run my computer from the cloud. Ain't gonna to happen. I will be looking into Linux or some other non Micrappoogle product when the time comes. "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787 |
