Hey OP...what is your opinion as to the factual basis of the holocaust? How about the average Russian/

Many people in west do not believe the official "story"
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70404925

Well... You won't like my answer, I presume.
The majority here (me included) beliefs the most of the story. Some suspect falsification of the actual number of victims, but few doubt the general narrative.

I'll remind you, that unlike USA, Russia (SU, whatever) saw how Nazis actually behaved. Soviet Union have lost 27 mln of people to during the war - and only 8 mln of them were soldiers. The rest were civilians, killed either in action - or in those very "death camps" Nazis used to eliminate Jews.

So yeah, we do believe the story. That's one of the reasons that "global Zionist conspiracy" theories are relatively less popular here. There are of course some anti-Semites, but they are mostly borderline neo-Nazis themselves. Which automatically makes them pariah here.

What is happening with the Anastasia movement at the moment? Are people interested in the free land on offer in the far east? Will Russia become the 'hope of the world' as Edgar Cayce said? Will you start living for your fellow man, as Anastasia has predicted?

Re: I'm Russian ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Your English is impressive. It is hard to fathom that you have never lived in US and can use English so well. I am originally from Belarus, was born during USSR and have been living in US for 14 yrs. You are very well educated. I am a female. Have you noticed that our people ( I still look at all the Soviet countries as one LOL) are more serious and not as outgoing/cheerful as westerners? I am married to an American and even though I am more outgoing than an average Russian person, I still get comments about me being too serious. Sometimes when I work with someone who associates with Americans only at work and comes otherwise from Russian family, even I notice that that person can be too straightforward, borderline rude, and unfriendly from first impression. I do not mean to say that our people are bad people, just that they sometimes lack social skills. Have you ever noticed that? Even my husband asked me visiting Belarus, why everyone looks angry. I never thought that way and after that comment I started watching it and noticed we do not smile as much as westerners. What do you think about this?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52195683

Well, I've been to England two times 18 or so years ago... don't thing it counts though. I still blame reading books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson for my English. :)

I was brought up mostly after SU collapse, but yeah, it's still unclear to me how Belarussians and other former Soviets are different from Russians.

And about Russia, politeness, ruddiness and smiles... I'd say, it's the peculiarity of Russian national character. We just don't have polite smile as a part of our culture. A man who smiles too much is perceived as a fool at best - or as someone who hides evil deeds and intentions behind his smile.

We always had more than enough land unlike Europe which had a relatively big population density.
It was very neatly explained in this text: [link to cluborlov.blogspot.ru]
If someone or something is unbearable for you, you can always find another place to be. Unlike Europe where you are forced to bear with it - "tolerate" it. That's also may be the reason why we don't really understand or like the word "tolerance" here.

BTW, Japan is a polar opposite of Russia here - they have enormous population with their quite meager land - and a culture in which showing your true thoughts on your face is socially unacceptable.

Re: I'm Russian ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Have you ever driven across your country? Some people do that here in North america, one end of the continent to the other. Russia much much bigger though.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62103152

There are two factors actually.
You are right, Russia is bigger: direct line between New York and San-Francisco is 4000 km or so, while the one between Anadyr and St. Petersburg is 6500 km. The real distance on earth is 9000 km or so.
And the second factor is the quality of roads. It's almost impossible to go all this way on your everyday car. You'll need a real Jeep at the very least. And roads are in this sorry state mostly because of the climate. Note that even Moscow is a bit further to the north, that Hudson gulf's southern edge. Roads are destroyed by the weather alone here.

But answering the first question... Well, the farthest I went from Moscow on a car in Russia is probably 300 km or so - Yaroslavl, Vladimir. But I've been in all even remotely historical places in this radius.
Also, I've traveled to St. Petersburg and Saratov by train and to Voronezh by plane. That concludes my travels inside Russia for now.
 Quoting: Tamonten

Thanks for replying. =) Watched a few videos of roads in Eastern Russia, yes they do look a little rough. The road to Yakutsk looks so cold and alone!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62103152

You've seen roads. Now watch what we call "bezdorozhye" - "roadlessness":
[link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

I won't say it's how all or even the majority of our roads looks like, but well... it happens.

What is your view on stalin and what he did?

Humm... I'll answer by quoting my most recent answer on the topic.

I know we have at least one Russian scholar/historian
on this thread..
Сергей Казанов

so my question to you is this...
how much is left OUT of this discussion?

Thanks ahead for your thoughts.

Well, the main thing that is left off is the state of Russian (or Soviet - whatever) society then. It may be unintended actually, because it's a thing not easy to understand even for the most of Russians, let alone an American.
As I see it, the thing is that when Stalin started his "cleansing" ("Great Terror") the majority if not all of Soviet elites were people with revolutionary past. They were people who've either betrayed their loyalty to Russian Empire 20 years before that or people who've weren't loyal to it from the very start and were actively working against the state during WWI. Why should Stalin been counting on them being loyal to Soviet Union instead? It includes civil servants ("Party apparatus") as well as the military. Actually, his suspicion turned out somewhat right, as the example of Vlasov and some other collaborators demonstrated. That's why I believe that the primary thought of getting rid of dangerous elements was quite right. He waited just enough for people who were brought up in SU, who had an undivided loyalty to it to be able to take place of those who he was targeting.
The other thing - but a logical continuation of the previous one - is that the majority of adult population of Soviet Union have seen the chaos of Civil War. They've remembered it's rules (a law of jungle, actually) as an integral part of their life. I believe that the real reason that the whole thing was allowed to supposedly "deteriorate beyond the reasonable magnitude" was because for the preservation of statehood (especially at the times of trouble which has come when the was has begun) required that the people must have been taught "a fear of law". It's of course regrettable that innocents were harmed, but I believe that the archived result - country's unity during the most critical time of our history - is a prize high enough to counter this argument.

For those not aware, I too had direct relatives who've suffered from the Soviet system. Including my Great Grandfather who was imprisoned under a false and ridiculous accusation, my Grandfather who was not allowed to live in Moscow due to the fact that he was captured by Nazis at some point of war - or even my Mother who was forced to state in her documents that her father was a PoW. I'm just trying to be objective and see into other possibilities. And by doing that I can not see another, sure, but less bloody and violent way someone would have been able to keep a country together and defeat Nazis. And if they were not defeated... let's say, we would have wished Stalin would have been twice as cruel as he was in reality.

What do you think of the black Americans coming over recently and stealing your women? It seems even you ruskies aren't doing shit about it.
 Quoting: Hispanic 46403096

I am from Belarus. See above post. Actually in our country( same as Russia) our guys beat the sh*t out of them. Talked to my friend over Skype, she told me. So we do not have "hate" crimes, LOL
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52195683

You need to work harder on it, I hate seeing any race of woman with a negro unless she is a negress. It's nasty and unnatural. I'm from Argentina originally and women there no not to associate with blacks, ecspecially those from the US.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46403096

Woman - as any person - is not someone's belonging. Well, unless it's her wish of course.
I'd say, that even for our nationalists (meaning people who are against cross-ethnic marriages and such) the meager amount of American or whatever blacks coming to Russia for this reason is not considered a major threat. They are mostly agitated about our own ethnic minorities - people from Causasus etc.
I personally don't see any problems here - unless girls are fooled or forced.

Re: I'm Russian ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Hello Tamonten,

I am the one from this thread "maybe the russians like to stay in germany after all.."

There is a specific question: what if I actually would welcome the russians to come to germany, as I think this is the only way left to clean the garbage of the country away...

Now, may I ask you, how could I possible let these russian soldiers know that in our house they are welcome for food and rest. Could I possible put a sign outside that says "welcome russian friend" or "finally you have come"
- in russian?

Anything to make them understand we are happy that they have come? But not in a frivolous manner, but really from the heart.

What could we possible do?

Please advise us.
Thank you.
.

That's some question here... o_O

Well... In such case (not very likely I should note) I'd recommend a flag or coat-of-arms of GDR - regardless of my own or your views on Communism and such. Maybe together with Russian flag too.
Russian flag - for the young soldiers, GDR emblem - for those of senior generation.
I won't recommend writing any Russian slogans or words however unless you are really able to speak Russian. It'll just disorient people instead. What I've listed above is quite enough to express support without risking to look silly though.

Well, you know... If not for the similar question on the previous page, I would not understood what you are even mean.

Here's my answer from there:
Do you know who Anastasia (Ringing Cedars) is from Siberia. And if so what are you thoughts.
 Quoting: TruthSeekerJess

Actually, the first time I've heard of it.
According to an article I've read now, Anastasia is a fictional character though.
 Quoting: Tamonten

I assumed so before reading the books as well. I believe it depends of your level of conscious awareness whether you inteperate her as a fictional or very much real person. Her insights on the history of the world, the future of russia and how we should live our earthly lives are extremely interesting. To me anyway. I hope you are able to read the books at some point. Great thread OP.
 Quoting: TruthSeekerJess

I've stated somewhere in this thread that even being self-styled Pagan, I tend to distance myself from Pagan and neo-Pagan sects. From what I've read on the matter, Ringing Cedars is one of such sects.
 Quoting: Tamonten

My only actual association with the name "Anastasia" is (if you don't count my acquaintances including one of my pupils) is Anastasia Romanova - a daughter of Nickolas II...

About the land - polls showed that a considerable amount of people are interested in the offer. The whole project would be meaningless if they were not. It's still in work though.
As for the hope of the world... We'll see. From the recent events it seems to me that I have all chances to see it for myself.

That - and I do believe that Russia is capable to defend itself.

But aside from genetics there are very important cultural differences. While Poland was an integral part of Western civilization, Russia was isolated from it till 17th century. Plus Orthodoxy-Catholicism controversy and difficult history of Partitions of Poland...

As for the rest - aside from several ongoing stereotypes, we are equally friendly to anyone, Poles included.

I told my wife, If the Russians invaded America
I wouldn't know whether to shoot at them,
or welcome them.

It's your choice either way. I have no right whatsoever to give you any recommendations here.
In every war for the motherland - and that's how we call all the wars when our land was invaded - the best people die first, because it's their instinctive reaction to protect their country. So, from this point of view I should have encouraged defending your homeland from any foe.
But, on the other side of the coin, I can't really recommend anyone to shoot my compatriots.
That's a conflicting issue.

It is no conflict, the question has already been solved
the enemy already has taken our homeland.

Any russian who comes to the land (america or germany) can never be as bad as the enemy who is here now.

Welcome russia!

Well, that's why I mentioned GDR coat-of-arms, as it was the polar opposite for America-controlled FRG.

I can be called to service only in the case of real declared war... and likely to be on the opposite front even in this case, because I studied Japanese.

What do average (non GLP) Russians think about the Western news media in general. Do they think that we, in the West, are being fed propaganda?

I'll give an answer on several levels.

1. Average Russians don't have real opinion on Western media, because not many people read or watch them here. Those who do are usually followers or members of our "liberal" "opposition" (no more than 7% of population), who always declare everything coming from the West as an absolute truth. Only Western media which is generally available to the Russians is "Euronews" and it's largely ignored by the most.
2. If people saw this Westen news, they'd be outraged, because it's in complete contradiction with our usual narrative - and, unlike times of later years of USSR - people in general are not inclined to trust everything as long as it's different from what official Russian media are saying.
3. And finally, my mother often read "Voice of America" and "BBC" news for the sake of pure curiosity. Usually it concludes with her telling what she was able to dig out. Half of the time - it results with laughter, half of the time - with outrage. Actually, the case with Su-24 now was an unusual case when Western media were almost in sync with Russian ones. Usually they are following completely different logics.

The fine example is the case with Russian food embargo. After it was introduced, there was at least three waves of "Russia is starving" propaganda in Western media. It was so baffling and hilarious that she even went to our local hypermarket and made a bunch of photos - two times. One time on the first wave of this nonsense, second time - on the third one.

It's likely though, that now, after food embargo against Turkey was introduced, she'll have to do another series of photos...
