What are the feds doing in an abandoned gold mine?

technically it's the Animas River that took the brunt of the leak. Animas is Spanish for "Souls". River of Souls. It's really bad news for Durango and the people in New Mexico. There's a few vids on YT. Use "Animas" to find a few more.

On Wednesday 08/05/2015 A Clean up Crew working for the EPA "accidentally" released of one million gallons of waste water from the Gold King Mine into a Tributary of the
San Juan and Colorado Rivers.

The Animas River Flows into the San Jaun River that flows into the Colorado River that Flows Into Lake Mead.

Animas river passes through the San Jauan National Forest in Colorado The Animas River passes through Animas Springs and the San Jaun Mountains Flows through Durango Colorado and heads south into New Mexico In Northern New Mexico the Animas River flows West through Aztec till it merges with the San Juan River in Farmington New Mexico and continues West past Kirtland New Mexico and then further West though
Shiprock and the Navajo Indian Reservation.
The San Juan River leaves New Mexico and passes through the
South West Corner of Colorado heading North West into Utah
flowing North West to Montezuma Creek and by the Navajo Indian Reservation and further west on the south edge of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Enters Lake Powell at the Southern Edge of Utah where it crosses the Norther Eged of Arizona and begins the Colordo River where the
Colorado River heads South through Grand Canyon National Park and ends up in Lake Mead and continues South through Hoover Dam and south into Lake Havasu and South into Mexico and the Gulf of California

Entire Colorado river turns YELLOW after one million gallons of toxic waste leaks from disused gold mine - but authorities insist there's no danger
Environmental Protection Agency wanted to pump out contaminated water from Gold King Mine near Durango
Coordinator says much more water than expected was behind dirt and it began leaking out before surging into river Contaminated Cement Creek leads to Animas River, which flows into New Mexico and joins Colorado River in Utah River turns orange with contaminants such as iron and zinc, though experts don't know exactly what is in the water Spill not believed to affect drinking water, though fears remain for wildlife as much courses downstream Preliminary tests show that the acidity of the river has increased 100-fold since the spill.

A federal mine cleanup crew unleashed a million-gallon mine toxic waste spill that sent a plume of orange-ish muck down a river in southwest Colorado on Thursday.
The US Environmental Protection Agency said that a cleanup team was working with heavy equipment Wednesday (Aug 05-2015)morning to secure an entrance to the Gold King Mine. Workers instead released an estimated 1 million gallons of mine waste into Cement Creek.
Contaminants coursed down the creek, which runs from around Silverton, Colorado, into the Animas River before flowing into the San Juan River in New Mexico and joining the Colorado River in Utah.
Officials say that the water, believed to now contain high amounts of iron and zinc, does not pose a threat to drinking water. However, fears remain that it may kill fish and other animals after the river's acidity increased 100-fold.

EPA spills 1 mln gallons mine waste, turns river in Colorado orange

The Environmental Protection Agency is warning residents to keep away from a river in Colorado after accidentally spilling mine waste water into it.

The EPA was investigating the abandoned Gold King Mine on Wednesday together with the state Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, when they triggered the release of the waste into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River in San Juan County.

Ironically, the initial goal was to find a safe way to pump out the wastewater and treat it.

Some one million gallons of waste water is estimated to have been discharged during the incident. The spill turned water in the river bright orange.

Local residents were advised to cut back on water use and keep away from the contaminated river until officials give it the all clear.

"The primary environmental concern is the pulse of contaminated water containing sediment and metals flowing as an orange-colored discharge downstream," said EPA spokesman Rich Mylott.

By Thursday, the spill had made its way to La Plata County and the city limits of Durango, the local Durango Herald reported. The city was forced to stop pumping river from the water and close it for public use.

City residents were asked to conserve water from the local reservoir, which cannot be refilled with the Animas River now under quarantine. However, no formal water restrictions were issued.

The EPA expects the first results of the tests to come out on Friday. They will show whether the waste has passed and poses no risk to aquatic life or water users.

I would think that's more likely a sign of problems within the earth like a major impending earthquake or volcano. Bodies of water sometimes change color before something like that happens. Wonder if it smells of sulphur. They won't tell us the truth anyway whatever it is.

It's ok. After it flows into Lake Powell and Lake Mead and the several small reservoirs down stream, it will all get pumped into the Imperial Valley for irrigation. There are likely good nutrients included along with the cyanide pit elixir.

We can expect a bumper winter crop with reduced prices..the EPA is brilliant!

I wonder if the water will turn the bass and trout flesh yellow. That would look cool on a plate.

They are saying the yellow mustard color is from the clay in Silverton, it's what you can't see that's bad, heavy metals and arsenic, people down stream in Farmington NM are freaking out today, the contamination is supposed to reach Lake Powell Wednesday

YES - this is what I'm thinking too. Impending earthquake or volcano. The entire lake isn't going to turn yellow because of a problem with a goldmine somewhere. That's not big enough. This is from within the earth. They're lying to us again. Or maybe lying to themselves as well. Pretty horrendous to face the real possibilities.
