Whenever anything really off the chart weird happens, Sorcha (can't link) always has an unimaginable explanation.
Sure enough, she says the meteor was a huge alien spacecraft shot down by the Russians. The 165 degree heat was recorded where the core of the vessel landed.
I hesitate to tell you what was piloting the craft or you might laugh.
