[link to www.examiner.com] Backer of Swift Boat ads funds group targeting Hill The Associated Press Sep 18, 2006 9:51 AM (2 days ago) Current rank: # 747 of 5,483 articles BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A group behind automated phone calls attacking Democratic congressional candidate Baron Hill is being funded by the Republican donor who helped bankroll the Swift Boat attack ads on Democratic Sen. John Kerry's war record. Bob J. Perry, a Texas homebuilder with close ties to White House adviser Karl Rove and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, recently donated $5 million to the Economic Freedom Fund, a newly created California group targeting Democratic candidates. Among those candidates is Hill, who is seeking to regain the congressional seat he lost two years ago to Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Sodrel in southern Indiana's 9th District. Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter is investigating the automated calls, which are illegal in Indiana unless the recipient agrees in advance to accept them. Agency spokeswoman Staci Schneider said seven people have filed complaints about automated calls, at least four of which were about Economic Freedom Fund calls. The law against automated calls provides for civil penalties of up to $5,000 per violation. "If they're doing business in the state of Indiana, people are expected to know what the laws are," she said. The group's status is 527, which is not subject to conventional campaign finance restrictions and can spend unlimited amounts on election advocacy, similar to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. In the 2004 presidential race, the group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations challenging Kerry's record of wartime heroism. According to its filing, the Economic Freedom Fund was formed to "promote policies and issues favoring economic freedom, growth and prosperity of the economy." Cam Savage, a spokesman for Sodrel, said the campaign knew nothing about the Economic Freedom Fund calls. He said the campaign has received complaints about calls placed on behalf of Hill. Philip Wilkinson, 41, of Bloomington, was one of those who filed complaints about the anti-Hill calls, saying he was on the state's do-not-call list. Wilkinson said he doesn't support Hill or Sodrel, but he's offended by negative ads. "When somebody gets real ugly, I'll say, 'Heck, I'll vote for the other guy,'" he said. ---- |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 21 United States 09/20/2006 05:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What are you talking about ? Rick Santorum is a very good senator, and deserves reelection. As for the " swift boat veterans", they did America a great service in revealing John Kerry's self-serving sordid, past. If Kerry had been elected, islamists would have been emboldened to attack our cities, and you might already be dead. Bush is of course, a pathetic public speaker, but at least he wants to kill the terrorists before they kill us.Kerry would have been on his knees apologizing and licking the terrorists. |

Rick Santorum received a lousy 10% rating for his anti-senior voting record from Alliance for Retired Americans because of his animus towards Social Security because he wants to privatize the program, and wants to raise the retirement age to 70!! He got a BIG FAT ZERO from the AFL-CIO indicating an extreme anti-union voting record due to voting against raising the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, and he voted to REPEAL Cinton's ergonomic rules on repetitive stress, which defies rationality. He only got a 27% from the National Education Association because of his anti-public education stance, yet he benefitted personally from home schooling his children. The League of Conservation Voters gives Santorum a zero rating because of his anti-environment stances. Need I go on??? His record also clearly indicates that he votes with bush 98% of the time!!! Yeah, A.C. 21, what was that you said? Santorum deserves to be reelected??? Not again. Not ever again. He deserves the door. What are you talking about ? And, he/they think we'll forget his actions. He also supported bush every step of the way with this sham war in Iraq. Yeah, we will ALL remember come November. <<snip: "Rick Santorum is a very good senator, and deserves reelection."
