Lord Mandelson attempted to halt the Labour leadership contest by persuading the other three candidates to quit in order to stop Jeremy Corbyn, it was claimed last night.
The former business secretary is said to have approached Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall privately last week to argue that the party would halt the contest if they all pulled out.
But the 61-year-old Labour grandee dropped the plan after officials warned him the withdrawal of the three mainstream rivals would hand immediate victory to Left-wing favourite Mr Corbyn.
The desperate move highlights the panic among mainstream Labour politicians about the mayhem 66-year-old Mr Corbyn will cause if he seizes power.
Miss Kendall is also said to have appealed to Miss Cooper to quit, arguing that only Mr Burnham has the breadth of appeal to see off the veteran left-winger.
