I am very aware of what it means to be a 33rd Degree Freemason.
My great grandfather was a 33rd degree freemason and it was passed down to him for generation after generation. It should have gone to my grandfather who was the first born but he wanted nothing to do with it so it went to his younger brother, the next male in the line. Now, his son sits as a supreme court judge!!! YES, I am well aware of all of the secret society that is going on behind the scenes.

I think that because people aren't privy to the world of masonry is why they fear it. I am not a mason, but I am very good friends with a 32nd degree mason and thought about joining (they cannot recruit) after volunteering at a mason (retirement) home making the residents food and helping with the overall operations. I really was impressed at how well these people are taken care of in their old age. They live 100 times better than your average senior. Hell, they live better than me! Masons are bound to care for their elders to their death (and my God they are cared for well), and in return assets are donated to the Masons.

There are mason organizations like the Shriners, who open hospitals to care for needy children and offer completely free healthcare to youngsters that is NOT paid for by the taxpayer.

Masonry is a fraternity, probably the strongest and most well known and longest lived of them all. The only requirement is that you believe that you have a creator, whoever that may be and that you do not discuss the specifics of masonry. This would be acceptable of any fraternity, and I honestly don't see the problem in it.
