IT Geniuses on GLP. Wiped Server.
Explain to us in dummy terms the process.

Why can media people who question Hillary
not use more precise wording other than "wiped".

This gives an opening to quipped responses like "with a cloth"?
Or
"What do you mean, wiped?"7

IT Genius discussion of Rogue Server issue appreciated.

The issue is meta-data.
Meta-data is like an addressed envelope is to a letter.

Clinton supplied the letters but not the envelopes.

The meta-data contains time-stamps, routing information, addresses, and most importantly- error-control information.

The meta-data would confirm if the .pdf copies of the e-mails had or had not been changed prior to converting them to pdf's.

Wiped means deleted, more precisely federal standards 'used' to require every sector to be zeroed-out 7 times before the data is considered deleted.
I assume the Fed standard has been upped since I last had to comply.
We all breathe the same air.

Department of Defense Data Wiping Standards

A DOD wipe exposes your hard drive to alternating magnetic fields that overwrite your original data with random patterns. A good wipe is 90% unrecoverable, and a DOD wipe is in the number of times the drive is re-written over with random patterns. The more times it is overwritten, the better — but a DOD wipe is obviously longer and more costly.

Because they deal with sensitive and top secret information at the Department of Defense, a DOD wipe requires that a hard drive be overwritten seven times to be considered unrecoverable.

If you deal with any sort of sensitive information — even as simple as storing financial data on your hard drive — it's worth considering a more extensive data wipe when you sell your used computer equipment.

Thank you for both responses.

Would someone other than DOD have ability to
do the alternating magnetic wipe?

How much time would it take considering the amount of info
on Hillarys Server?

Must you be in possession of Server to do magnetic passes, meaning in same room?
Or can it be done remotely?

here is software that many people use to wipe a drive. yes, the dod standard is 7 but, I prefer 31. note, both are odd numbers.

YW.

Yes, just about any IT-tech will have the software necessary.

Not very long. Minutes to hours at most.

Yes, it's possible to delete potions of a hard drive remotely.
Entire hard drive wipe is possible if Boot sectors and OS are hosted on physically different hard drive.
