Proper Respirators (Dust Masks) for Protection Against Volcanic Ash
I went to a Home Depot store, in order to buy N95 respirators for protection against volcanic ash.

I saw the following two products:

3M Drywall Sanding Valved Respirator

[link to www.3m.com]

3M Particulate Respirator 8511

[link to www.3m.com]

I asked two Home Depot employees, which of these two products would give me better protection against volcanic ash.

Employee #1 said that, in his opinion, neither product would protect me from the ash.

Employee #2 said that the Drywall product would protect me only from Drywall. The other product would give more general protection and would protect me from volcanic ash.

So, what do you guys think? Which product should I buy? Thanks for any assistance.

also cheap N95 are useless because air leaks on sides
Lead abatement P100 takes all dust
Don't think more is better this time , good P100 is worth 10 P95

Re: Proper Respirators (Dust Masks) for Protection Against Volcanic Ash
In the thread that I started a few months ago, some people advised me to purchase N95 masks. These people stated that P100 masks were very expensive and would clog up very quickly. N95 masks were much cheaper and would not clog up as quickly.

On the Home Depot website, there is only one disposable P100 mask, which sells for $10 per unit. That is, indeed, very expensive.

So, now, you guys are advising me to buy P100 masks?

The following website seems to indicate that N95 masks would be sufficient:

I should mention that I live in Chicago and that my primary concern is Yellowstone volcano. If Chicago were filled with volcanic ash, I would be outdoors for only brief periods of time. I would go outdoors to sweep ash off my roof and to buy groceries. That's it.

So, should I really spend a lot of money on P100 masks? Or will the N95 masks suffice?
