Re: FERMI 2 REACTOR MICHIGAN - ONGOING EVENT - BIG PROBLEMS
What we need now are experts, people who understand a emergency in the nuclear field!!!!!!!
Call Fukushima and get those people over here now, they understand, they have experience!!!!
And they might be able to make the lake glow at night!
Why was that reactor built next the lake!!!!!!!!!!
 Quoting: Milo824

Reactors are always built near water. The water is used to cool the reactor and turned to steam to drive the turbines. I use to enjoy swimming in the water freshly returned to the lake from a reactor. It was usually around 85 degrees, like a warm bath.

I'm just north of Detroit, haven't heard a thing on this.

Will ask around tomorrow

The Fermi 2 emergency plans are tested regularly. The Federal government requires a complete test of the plan each year.

This does not boost my confidence level at all.

Tested how?

Geez, give it a rest. The POTUS has had little or nothing to do with the regulation of nuclear power....ever.

Look to the NRC, and see what kind of palling around in the bathhouse is happening in THAT agency. They've been dumbing down the standards since the 1970's.

If he can't take the heat, he needs to resign. NOW.

Does this have anything to do with the power fluctuations? I don't know but this is insane. Check it out.

can someone give me a laments summary. im not too familiar with these terms
 Quoting: HeftyBump

All of the various systems to keep a reactor powered up seem to have failed at once.

It started with a leak, which they fixed - but pressure was still wonky.

Then water dropped to dangerous low level for no apparent reason.

They started manually "controlling" pressure and then found the water system has some totally new leak somewhere else, which they can't seem to find. But they know it's happening.

At some point while looking for other mysterious leak the water dropped AGAIN, so they are pumping and keeping water in and controlling relief pressures manually...which you only do in a fairly extreme emergency.

Next few hours very important, they have to maintain water over rods or you can get something like this:
[link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

FERMI 2 is the same style of reactor as Fukushima.

As this plant sits right on the Great Lakes it would be very bad if things got out of hand there. They had a partial meltdown there in 1966.

When I read the report it sounds nothing like what you are saying.

That would be your lack of intelligence, not to worry....
But I'd play with fire to break the ice...
And I'd play with a nuclear device...
Is it something I'll regret?
Why do I want what I can't get?
I wish it didn't have to be so bad...

No, it was a combination of failures, as outlined by the NRC reports and doc assessment from UCS. This event, as also stated, is ongoing.

What the hell? This makes me so mad. Why are we not allowed to vote on issues like nuclear power plants, and not building them? Instead the issues are always the same... we the people have lost the power to actually choose what happens in our country.

If the doom so many wait for actually happened, the survivors will slowly be nuked to death anyways.

Probably a weld on the reactor vessel. Those things are old and most should be shut down. But like everyone else, I enjoy the benefits of electricity. To bad there is a moratorium on construction of new nuclear power plants so these 60's designed and 70's built plants cannot be easily replaced.

As this is GLP I expect people with no scientific understanding or education to start in on greeeeeen energy, the classified power sources from zeti reticuli UFO's, secret Nazi super power systems, and extraction of unlimited energy from farts.

The only real solution is to abandon everything that draws power in any form. If you are in a rural area, you can do renewable on an individual basis, but this will never work in a high population density city.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61301259

Complete and UTTER BALDERDASH!

When I was a young child of 7 or 8,I began to research the use of fission as a means of generating electricity. The information that was available at the time was limited, but it was enough to see that there was an immensely complicated technology involved, and that what would actually happen under certain failures and human error was impossible to predict, but it ranged up to an including making a huge geographical area uninhabitable for thousands of years while killing directly hundreds of thousands or perhaps even millions of people.

By the time I was 10, I was CERTAIN that such endeavors were not only economically unsound, but would eventually result in serious accidents effecting millions if not billions of people. I wrote letters to senators and state representatives telling them of my fears, and not a one ever responded, not even once.

My conclusion at 10 YOA in 1972 was that the use of fissionable radioactive elements in the production of electricity was in fact insane, and that it was not if, but when there would be an uncontrolled runaway situation resulting in a explosion and a release of ungodly amounts of radiation. I now believe the people behind the proliferation of nuclear power are the same people who are trying to kill us every other way they can think of, what perplexes men about it is surely they realize they are killing the planet THEY live on too!

I feared it, I still do, I suppose because I knew what the potential was.

To be honest if nuclear fission reactors were the only viable method to produce electricity, I would be content to do without. But we DON'T HAVE TO! We have far more tenable ways to produce energy, using clean coal technology, natural gas, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric power, and solar energy. The use of the heat of nuclear fission to produce electricity was without a doubt the most insane technological development since the Manhattan project produced an atom bomb, and two cities were annihilated in my opinion just to illustrate to the world the potential they had.

To boil down what I have said into a single sentence, "There are psychopaths running the planet and they are intent on exterminating us all."

The reality is we will never know how serious it is unless it blows up.They won't say. History has shown even when they have serious accidents and have no idea what will happen and realize the potential exists for a total failure of cantonment as a result of criticality , they sit on the information and soothesay on the news. They ALWAYS minimize the dangers by a factors that are incalculably high. The potential is for this type of reactor to actually experience a nuclear criticality and a nuclear blast sufficient to rupture the containment, AS HAPPENED IN FUKASHIMA! If that happens the great lakes and the St. Lawrence river are essentially dead.

Re: FERMI 2 REACTOR MICHIGAN - ONGOING EVENT - BIG PROBLEMS
I have guesstimated that it would cost 1/10 what it does to put a nuclear power plant into operation to simply bore holes deep enough into the ground to reach hot enough geological regions to produce a nearly unlimited supply of geothermal energy.

While geothermal energy is being exploited on a tiny scale in limited regions where hot regions are near the surface, the fact that this energy source is not exploited more is simply because it is so cheap and impossible to put a meter on in private hands.

Think about it, heating and cooling of privately owned homes and businesses could very easily be implemented using the fact that the temperature of the Earth is a constant 60 degrees 20ft down. It isn't exploited except on a very limited basis, but it is something every home should have by now,

Even with renewable sources, you still need a conventional generator to keep the batteries topped off, for when the sun don't shine and or the wind don't blow.

The terrorists attacks which will be launched in the United States will be blamed upon middle eastern religious fanatics, Christian fundamentalists, white supremacists, Patriots, or Militias. A more immediate result of these operations will be the increased use of military forces, weaponry, and equipment such as tanks and armored personnel carriers in civilian law enforcement, the suspension or elimination of Habeas Corpus, the elimination of jury trials, the attempted disarming of the American People, and the institution of martial law with show-trials conducted by a tribunal of judges. - William Cooper 1997 (RIP)

The light is always stronger than the darkness.

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. - John 3:19

Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. - Mark 13:29

Does this have anything to do with the power fluctuations? I don't know but this is insane. Check it out.

Interesting.
I slept with a fan in my window lastnight (cool night) and it kept fluctuating faster & slower.

I was wondering what was going on.

Someone I know who spoke to the NRC resident inspector last night said he would not comment except to say the ordeal at Fermi has been "harrowing" and he was onsite. More info will come out later today. They are in CYA mode. Rad readings in Detroit and Toledo had huge spikes last night on RadNet.
