he Saudi civil defence said the stampede occurred when two groups of pilgrims walking towards the Jamarat pillars met at the junction of Street 204 and Street 223 in the Mina tent city. In a statement they said there was a sudden increase in the number of people at the junction, "resulting in a stampede among the pilgrims and the collapse of a large number of them".
