Breaking: Laval highway overpass collapses
Last Updated: Saturday, September 30, 2006 | 2:36 PM ET
CBC News

An overpass in Laval, Que., collapsed on Saturday, injuring at least five people and leaving at least three vehicles buried under a massive slab of concrete, police said.

Three southbound lanes of Boulevard de la Concorde fell onto Highway 19 around noon ET, police said.

Chantal Mackelf, spokesperson for Quebec provincial police, said three vehicles remain buried in the rubble.

The rear end of a van could be seen sticking out from the rubble, along with part of a car and what appeared to be a sports utility vehicle.

Eight to 10 fire trucks were at the scene.

The routes involved include a major highway connecting Laval to the island of Montreal.

Police are advising motorists to stay clear of the area. Highway 19 and Boulevard de la Concorde have both been closed to traffic.

More to come

I sure hope those stinky Zeta aliens are wrong but this does look suspiciously like a stretch zone disaster. If you look at the map in is in the area that is supposed to be pulled apart. Dang! That sucks!!!

Re: Breaking: Laval highway overpass collapses
Our company has a division in Laval and I go there regularly. I have never seen a city with worse roads than there. The ride from Trudeau International is hell on any rental car.

Inside the city it is even worse.

I made a comment once and was told that it was due to the freeze thaw cycle but that is a bunch of crap. I also lived in Norway for 7 years, and in the Dakotas, and their roads aren't like that. After challenging it, other people piped in and said their infrastructure went to hell when they brought in socialized medicine. They can no longer afford to maintain their road systems because of the cost of free medicine.

There's no such thing as a 'stretch zone' just like there is no such thing as 'zetas.'

The only stretching going on is in Nancy LIEder's imagination.

I just head on French TV that a lot of complaints came about that stretch of highway and their was someone on the scene to access the claims 1 hour before this happened.

The complaints were stating that pieces of cement were seen falling off.

The “expert” concluded that their was no sign for urgency.

That’s what I meant by keeping the education system full of cash.
