Some traces of the oldest authentic myths may have survived in runic songs. There is a song about the birth of the world – a bird lays three eggs and starts to lay out the nestlings – one becomes Sun, one becomes Moon and one becomes the Earth. Other Finno-Ugric peoples have also myths according to which the world has emerged from an egg.

Mastabas and benben has come up on the thread before. In this book, Ancient Egypt by J.E. Manchip White, talks a bit about both and since stone has been on the thread the last few days or so here is some of what it says:

"During the Fourth Dynasty many nobles began to construct their mastabas of stone. Stone was a material hitherto reserved for the exclusive use of the king, probably because of the technical and economical difficulties of quarrying and transport at this early date.
...
The mastabas usually consisted of a single underground room with a recess for the stone or wooden coffin. There was often a small pit which was possibly intended to hold the viscera removed during mummification. Later the viscera were contained in canopic jars. A massive portcullis blocked the entrance to this room. The superstructure of the mastaba now contained a diminutive and frequently entirely inaccessible room called the serdab, an Arabic word signifying a cellar. Inside the serdab stood the statue of the dead person looking through a narrow slit on a level with its eyes. There was no door or window in the serdab: only the slit through which the statue, abode of the soul, gazed at the worshippers in the chapel with its painted or crystal eyes.

The pyramid evolved from the mastaba during the Third Dynasty, perhaps under the influence of the sun cult of Heliopolis. We saw that Aha of the First Dynasty was buried in a replica of his earthly palace, where he would pass an earth-bound eternity. The pyramids of the Pharaohs of the Third Dynasty show that this conception was giving ground to a new idea: That the dead Pharaoh could now ascend to heaven. A spell written on the walls of one of the pyramids of the Fifth Dynasty announces: 'A staircase to heaven is laid for Pharaoh, that he may ascend to heaven thereby.' At first the pyramid was constructed like a gigantic series of steps leading upwards into the sky, but when the steps were filled in and the four faces of the pyramid presented a smooth appearance to the beholder a secondary idea was emphasized. The pyramid was also the symbol of Ra, a magnification of the small pyramidal stone called the benben which reposed in the temple of Ra-Atum at Heliopolis. The benben probably represented the 'hillock of eternity' whereon the creator Ra-Atum first made his appearance. Where better could Pharaoh, the Son of Ra and his reincarnation upon earth, consign his body than within the 'hillock of eternity'? The benben and the pyramid were also emblematic of the cone of the sun's rays as they poured down upon the earth. The benben was probably gilded to resemble the golden cone of sunshine, and at the top of every pyramid rested a gilded pyramidion in imitation of the sacred benben.

The word pyramid is tentatively derived from a Greek word meaning 'wheaten cake', possibly because the Greeks and Egyptians made cakes of pyramidal shape.

Note the two different types of eternity, earth-bound and heaven-ascent. Strange thing though that the pyramid, benben, association is with Atum which sometimes means mound along with benben.

The Benben stone, named after the mound, was a sacred stone in the temple of Ra at Heliopolis.
