With the top-level negotiations to finalize the huge trade agreement already extended two days, Washington's partners in the 12-country talks appeared to be stiffly resisting its push for much more than the five-year patent protections more widely accepted.

The United States, which has a 12-year standard domestically to protect the creations of pharmaceutical companies, was said to be willing to compromise at eight years, but Australia, Chile and Peru at least have resisted the push.

The issue is one of the last to be settled in the long-running TPP negotiations, along with still-sticky talks on freeing up markets for New Zealand and Australian dairy exports, a particularly sensitive challenge to Canada.

Successful negotiations could lead to the creation of the world's largest free-trade pact, covering 40 percent of the world's economy.

The partners -- which also include Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Mexico -- have already agreed on a broad range of issues, from handling foreign investor disputes to weakening protections for state enterprises to lowering barriers to trade in textiles and farm goods.

The trade ministers and other top officials in the talks were ready to let them spill over into Sunday but not beyond, according to officials involved.

Trade ministers from the United States, Japan and 10 other Pacific Rim countries opened final-stretch negotiations Wednesday trying to seal a deal on the world's largest free-trade pact, the Trans-Pacific Partnership.


The stakes were high for many, with farm and pharmaceutical industry lobbyists from various countries and civil society activists gathered at the same Atlanta hotel to defend their interests.

And as the ministers began meeting Wednesday, a handful of protestors marched through the lobby of the hotel chanting "No TPP! Stop Corporate Greed."

Chief among the politically sensitive final issues under negotiation are US import barriers on some Japanese car parts, market openings to Australia and New Zealand dairy products, and the length of patent protections for life-saving new-generation drugs.

Both of North Carolina's Republican US Senators said Thursday that targeting tobacco in a sweeping trans-Pacific trade agreement puts congressional approval at risk.

Sens. Thom Tillis and Richard Burr argued that they will work to defeat the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) if tobacco is excluded from protections provided to other agricultural products in the pact.
