How to reduce irrigation by 95% (“Back to Eden” gardens) | |
CTTE User ID: 70588394 United States 10/18/2015 09:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a small farm in a summer hot area and water is always an issue. Saw the time on the video and was like really? But I thought I would give it 5 mins or so. Ended up watching most all of it. First year or so growing, I had a problem with bottom rot on the tomatoes. It is not caused by calcium deficiency, but inconsistent watering. I went to mulching a couple years back and it resolved the bottom rot, but I was only mulching about a 2 foot diameter around each plant. Last year I mulched an area for Roma tomatoes for our canning. The area was the easiest to care for. The video is accurate. This winter will be focused on spreading as much FREE mulch from our local land fill and give the tiller a rest. Thanks for posting the video. |

His method is not revolutionizing tho. People have used ground covers for a long time, but we are taught, that using wood chips can be bad for the plants, because wood chips will take nitrogen from the soil and you will need to add fertilizer (but this is mostly when you add fresh green materials into the soil as well). |

We now use a tree cutting service for our rental properties. They supply us with almost all the mulch we want. I have had 2 full truckloads dumped in front of my house. I no longer have a lawn, I only watered one rose bush times this summer. I live in the foothills of central CA so we have many people on water tanks in their yard. This is spreading fast here in certain areas. Our neighbor has a large lot and has had about 100 truck loads dumped, you can see the steam rising from his property in the AM. He is going to have the best topsoil ever! I absolutely love mulch now that I have used it alot. I even buy the store stuff for color in by front yard as accents. Only a few plants this year due to 7 year rest but plan to really plant again in the upcomming year. Only problem so far is bermuda grass loves this stuff. I recommend this to everyone to some extent. It is also great to get rid of mud puddles on roads that are not paved. I am a Human first and foremost. |

Quoting: Miss anonymous In our World today, we often complicate things. Our nature is amazing, and we could learn a lot just by watching, and copy what it does. Paul Gautschi, the gardener in the film, refer a lot to the Bible and God, but the science of this gardening method will fascinate you, religious or not. Link to the documentary: [link to documentarystorm.com] The music "Eden" is really good too, I have already listen to it several times (can also be found in the very end of the film). I thought the thread was about how to reduce IMMIGRATION by 95%. Carry on. |

Do you know which kind of wood chips you get, or is it a mix? Isn't Bermuda Grass used for a lot of different medical treatments? (maybe this is just an extra bonus for you) hehe |

You must have leaf brances mixed in. This is where the nutrients come from. Little to no water is needed. Watch "L2survive" youtube channel. He feeds his chickens garden and yard waste and adds chips. Every year or three he screens a layer into the garden in the fall. Layer everthing. All ash from heating goes into chicken yard, egg shells, kitchen waste, ect. Lay flooring construction paper over grass and use 6 inches of leaf/chip. First year or two needs blood meal fertilizer. Pull back chips and plant in soil, plant gets half a foot, push back chips. Every fall add 6 inches until it builds up. Then as topping if wanted. Continue layering chicken yard soil in garden. The PhD's came and measured the soil. It's 10x - 50× above baseline in nutrients. |

These plants can take up in the water no matter how much you order them. They can't drive into the soil and pick up nutrients because of this condition. The soils are artificial and dead. His soils when he started wear hard blue clay impossible to grow in. Now you can dig down as deep is your arm with just your hand into living soil. The root systems are immense. This year in Washington was a drought he didn't water once and got a beautiful garden like always with huge production and gigantic plants. |

Good soil is all about having the proper biology (bacteria, fungi, Protozoa, nematodes) and maintaining aerobic conditions. By maintaining proper biology, you don't need fertilizer of pesticides/herbicides. I am I the process of taking the last course of the 4 courses from Life in the Soil and plan to become certified in 2016. Classes are expensive but if your life depends on the soil, it is worth every penny. |

But to be on the safe side, it is best to rake up the leaves, and to avoid using the bark or chips as a mulch, except around plants that tolerate juglone. Keep leaves and other black walnut debris out of the compost pile, too. [link to www.extension.umn.edu] |

He is doing something similar in a small part in his own garden, and the first year with this cover, the soil will (most likely) be in need of extra nitrogen. But after the first year, it will all go into balance. |
