How You Can Help the Amish School Shooting Victims
Sorry, no link. I received this in email.

How You Can Help the School Shooting Victims

The children who were injured in the Lancaster County school shooting continue in our care -- two are in critical condition and one has been upgraded to serious. Thanks to the PICU team for their continuing great care of these children and their families.
A very nice article in this morning's Inquirer captures both the professionalism and the compassion of our ED team that was so well displayed on Monday. It is a reflection not only of Rich and Jeannie who were featured, not only of the ED staff, but of everyone who works here.

You can read the article here.

Some of that compassion has been reflected in the outpouring of people who want to help the children and their families - financially and otherwise.

Thank you.

If you would like to help, there are several very good ways that you can contribute:

Donate to the Mennonite Disaster Services Fund

Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) are accepting financial contributions to assist the affected community.

Contributions to the Amish School Recovery Fund will help the affected community with medical care, transportation, supportive care and other needs. Tax-deductible donations can be made by calling MCC at (717) 859-1151, or MDS at (717) 859-2210 or to donate online, go to www.mds.mennonite.net or www.mcc.org.

Support Local Community Funds

At least two banks in the Lancaster area have set up funds so that people may easily help out.

They are:

Nickel Mines Children's Fund
Coatesville Savings Bank
1082 Georgetown Road
Paradise, PA 17562

Nickel Mines School Victims Fund
Home Towne Heritage Bank
100 Historic Drive
P.O. Box 337
Strasburg, PA 17579

Give Blood

The region's blood supply is dangerously low. There is a critical need for blood as CHOP continues to provide transfusion support for CHOP patients and those affected by the recent tragedy. In particular, there is a desperate shortage of type O negative blood and the American Red Cross has less than a two day blood supply of O negative to support Penn-Jersey Region Hospitals. If you would like to donate blood and/or have questions about the blood donation process, please contact 1-800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) or the CHOP Transfusion Service Coordinator, Qiana Riley at 267-426-5368.

Donate to Our Social Work Emergency Fund

If people wish to make donations to a general hospital support fund that assists families for a variety of services through the Social Work Department, our Social Work Emergency Fund provides such assistance. For more information please visit the Ways of Giving link on the CHOP internet site.

Contribute for Followup Medical Care
Dr. Holmes Morton and Dr. Kevin Strauss of the Clinic for Special Children, who manage a number of chronic diseases in the Lancaster County Amish and Mennonite populations, will be helping to orchestrate the followup care for many of the surviving children. If anyone wishes to donate to this clinic which is largely funded by the Amish community, contact:

The Clinic for Special Children
P. O. Box 128
Strasburg, PA 17579
[link to www.clinicforspecialchildren.org]

Finally, support the children and their families with your thoughts and prayers while giving them the space and privacy that they need so much at this time.

Thank you again for compassion and concern.

How does giving blood help the Amish shooting victims? I asked the same thing after 911 when people were on a blood-giving spree.

It's not that giving blood helps the children of this incident, A.C., donations will help OTHERS in that the donation of blood will replace that which was used on the little girls.

Much was used, I'm sure, and we do need to be reminded to donate.

As a former resident of that area...grew up there....and even went to the Nickel Mines Pool....and still have relatives close to where that happened,it sure struck close to home with me. Many thoughts went through my mind. I guess things like that can happen anywhere....and no one is completely safe. I know the Amish will have plenty of help with donated transportation etc. I know about Amish beliefs and although it is tragic, they maintain faith that God is in control. I think the real test will be the survivors and their return to daily life...especially a return to school.

BTW.....lest we forget....the millions of people and little kids starving in the world today...and maybe the brevity of what we saw with the school school shootings will remind us how tragic some of the kids and adults that are blown up in Israel by deranged terrorist bombers. The forces of evil are out there.
