The difference is intent.
Service to Self
vs.
Service to Other.
Both provide a sense of satisfaction to the person willing it into the collective.
Hence the term, There are no self-less good (bad) deeds.
The trick is simple. Whether you are positive or negative, perform your act with no personal interest in the equation.
