2-year-old boy suffers brain damage, broken bones as result of beatings; mother arrested by East Baton Rouge deputies


A Baton Rouge mother who beat her 2-year-old son with a belt so severely suffered possible neurological impairment has been booked into Parish Prison on counts of attempted first-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to juveniles, the sheriff’s office said.Samantha Snell, 29, 8562 Rush Ave., told deputies she’d beaten the boy Monday “as a form of discipline for getting water out of the refrigerator,” East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.Snell told deputies the boy fell to the ground and hit his head on a tile floor after she hit him with a belt, Hicks said. The child stopped eating, was in and out of consciousness and slept for roughly fourteen and a half hours, eventually prompting Snell to bring the boy to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon, Hicks said.
