Cyclone Chapala Lashes Socotra with Flooding, Damaging Winds
One person is dead and at least nine have been injured after Chapala, a strong tropical cyclone in the Arabian Sea, sideswiped the Yemeni island of Socotra Sunday. The Associated Press said that in addition to the casualties, Chapala has caused flooding from torrential rain and storm surge. Strong winds have also caused power outages on the island.
Socotra is an island that lies about 150 miles east of the Horn of Africa and about 200 miles southeast of Yemen's mainland, which is on the Arabian Peninsula. The north shore of the island, closest to the center of the storm, has been hit the hardest this weekend.
