Police: Frito Lay dumpster diver busted for allegedly stealing expired chips

Its not. If the dumpster was in a public place he can legally dumpster dive; but if it is private property, he could be charged with trespassing.

Frito lay is concerned with legal liability. This is the reason why they don't give away expired chips to, say, homeless shelters. The chips are perfectly fine to eat, but their lawyers tell them it makes them liable if someone gets sick from the chips, chokes, dies, etc. My employer, a very large accounting firm, used to send uneaten catered food to homeless shelters, but stopped around 2008 for the same reason, legal liability. A lot of perfectly good food gets thrown away,I take some of it home myself.

You would think the cops would be embarrassed arresting and booking this guy. Pathetic.

shit we used to dumpster dive in my early 20's.

the favorite spot was the Sake factory dumpsters. cases and cases of 'out of spec' sake.

the other was the chocolate place. i don't like sweets, but their stuff was fine.

lots of stores and and places throw perfectly good food out.

i worked at a pizza place when i was 19 and we were told to throw out leftover slices when we closed the place up.

i was making 5.50$ an hour and going to college full time paying my own way,

you think when i took the garbage closing the place up i didn't take them home and live off them being a starving student.

Lol.. back when there was one of these in Minneapolis.. and Minneapolis was still a good town you could walk around at night, we raided the Frito Lay dumpster quite often.

Except is wasn't a dumpster, it was pallets full of treats and chips free to take, what was left went in the dumpster.

One of my friends knew people at a Hostess factory when the unions were running them. The unions required that they made so much food independent of demand so it resulted in tons of extra twinkies and cup cakes.

My buddy would pull up with his truck and fill the bed with old donuts and then feed them to his work horses. The horses would all stand around looking like they were on crack with the powdered sugar on their mouths...

How could frito-lay be legally liable for someone getting sick from eating their expired product if "stolen" from a dumpster? Surely they could turn a blind eye.

Oh please. That's crazy. Those chips guys give that stuff away in offices that have vending machines. The guy used to ask me if we wanted them in our office. I took them. Why not? The expiration date isn't the 'go bad' date. Then I gave 'em away. lol.

Civil lawsuits, not criminal. You can sue for anything as long as you git lawyers willing to do it. Big companies generally settle out of court and try stop any publicity surrounding lawsuits.

Yes, all of these corporate pig stores have a way of desroying perfectly good merchandise and food just so no one can have it for free.

I worked at Pier 1 imports and they would destroy furniture and shit before tossing it out...such a waste. Most things had superficial scratches and dents and couldn't be sold but surely could have been used in some fucking capacity.

Yes, but since it's in a dumpster, fenced and locked (like many fast food dumpsters), they are no longer liable.

I feel so safe now that that there's one less homeless corn chip pilferer off the streets.
