Jesus states several times that He does ONLY the Will of the Father. Yet at the same time, Jesus CAN ASK the Father for certain things, and if the Father agrees, then it happens. 2 cases in point. In John 11 we see the story of raising Lazarus from the dead. Notice what Jesus states...and it's pretty clear that Jesus had asked the Father that He would be allowed to raise Lazarus. 40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone [from the place] where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up [his] eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. The opposite result happens in Matthew 26, during Jesus' prayers (in Gethsemane) to the Father. It's clear that THIS request by Jesus to the Father was NOT allowed.Matthew 26:39 (KJV) And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. One last thought. Although it's clear that God's Will has always been and will continue to be done, it's also clear that He doesn't micro-manage every single thing in life (think free will), AND He listens and takes into consideration each person's petitions / prayers. 2 Bible stories bear this out. ***Abraham debating God concerning the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. ***King David being given a choice of punishments over his "census taking" in 2 Samuel 24 / 1 Chronicles 21 [ link to www.biblestudytools.com] [ link to www.biblestudytools.com]
