Prayers needed !!!

My new grandson AJ has an appointment on the 17th with the hearing specialist. Please pray for this to be something minor, like wax or fluid.

We got some really bad news about my grandson AJ, and frankly, I am a total basket case right now.I can barely concentrate to type this out. My daughter Elizabeth got the results of AJ's newborn tests from the hospital. He has tested positive for sickle cell. The doctor will do a retest when AJ is 4 months old.If it is negative, he is a carrier. If the 2nd test is positive, the diagnoses will be full blown sickle cell anemia.

Elizabeth is totally devastated, frightened, and beyond consoling. Full blown sickle cell anemia means a shorter life span full of medical complications. While there have been some medical advances, the lifespan of those with sickle cell has been increased from 20 to about 40,there is no cure.
Please storm Heaven my friends !!!

We are hoping for this, that he is just a carrier. There is no doubt he has sickle cell, but the rest will not be known for sure until he is 4 months old when the doctor does a repeat blood test. From what I have read, if a baby has full blown sickle cell, it manifests in the 6th or 7th month.

I did some research on sickle cell. Sickle cell is more prevalent among the African American community, about 1 out of 12 test positive, but out of this percentage, only 1 in 400 get full blown sickle cell anemia. Also, 1 out of 100 Latino's are also a carrier, and test positive, and can get full blown sickle cell anemia also. Caucasians can also carry the gene for this and have full blown sickle cell anemia, but it is not common for caucasians.

From what I read, this is a recessive gene, like the one for cystic fibrosis.Perfectly healthy parents with no prior family history of either one of these, can have a child with these genetic diseases. You would not know you are a carrier unless you had genetic testing done.

So, we got the hearing specialist appointment for AJ, on the 17th. A little over 3 months from now, he will get further testing for sickle cell. I am totally stressed out. :(

One day at a time is all I can do. Husband is sick with the flu and being awful. Youngest is out of state and will not be back until monday. My dog Sheba has a bladder infection and I am taking her to the Vet this morning, and the oldest is going with me. Afterwards,my oldest is going out of town too. I have been real congested the past couple of days, and today am sick, but I got to keep on going.I think I got a whopper sinus infection. I got my hands full, and I think the stress caused me to be sick. :(
