I've got a situation that could use some prayers. Sort of a long story to get to the important stuff so I'll leave all of that out.

My sister, the married one with 2 little children, had an MRI done yesterday/last night. Her doctor called her today (while she was at work) to tell her that the MRI shows multiple blood clots either in or on her brain. Some are months old and some are newer.

She hasn't been able to see correctly out of one of her eyes for a few months now. And gets headaches all the time.

WTF?!

: (

On top of that, my sister asked her doctor if this is something that could be life-threatening and her doctor said no! Ummmmm, YES it can be!!!

Ironically (not so much anymore) when she got the epidural a few months ago before delivering my niece, she said that it killed and sent a very sharp pain up her spine, up her neck and into her BRAIN. She was telling us this the day she delivered. Since then she has had terrible headaches, lost most of the vision in one of her eyes and just starting this week she's having trouble saying some words at times. : (

Please pray for her if you pray. Her name is Mandy.

"Risks of Epidural Steroid Injections

Lumbar epidural steroid injection procedure belongs to a group of risk associated procedures. After the drug administration a patient may complain about numbness of the bowels or the bladder. Still this is only temporary.
Definitely the most common complications are infections, dural puncture, hemorrhage and damage of the nearby nerves. Infections can be more or less serious. A dural puncture is usually followed by headache. The headache occurs after the drug administration and is also known as spinal headache. It is present for a few days and then it withdraws... ...Hemorrhage is a complication that usually affects patients who have already been suffering from coagulopathies. The spinal nerves can be damaged either directly by the needle or indirectly by consequent infection or hemorrhage."

I guess the question to ask the doctor would be if this could be related to a mishap while administering the epidural anesthesia. It would explain the initial symptoms she had and possibly the hematomas on her brain if their was hemorrhaging involved. Bleeding would change the very sensitive pressures in the spinal and cranial cavities and could cause trauma to the brain. The two may or may not be related, but it is something to ask the doctor about.

The treatment is usually to watch the situation to see if it will resolve on its own. If it does not then surgery may be done.

Praying for your sister. grouphug
