I have certainly heard that regards car auctions. People in the crowds keep bidding. If it stops with them, the car just goes back in a few weeks late.
But hope something positive comes out of it for your daughter.
Do you have shared ownership in the USA. We have lots of properties that people can buy just 20% to start with. the rest is owned by a Housing Association.
Shared ownership housing schemes explained. Shared ownership schemes are a cross between buying and renting; aimed mainly at first-time buyers. You own a share and then rent the part you don't own at a reduced rate.

A person can even petition a court to add one or more people to the title. For example, a man owns a house, gets married, then has his wife added as a co-owner.  I never heard of someone buying 20% of a house. Multiple owners, yes, but not buying 20%.
