Re: Russian endgamer: S-500 will be the end game when it's finished (Mikhail Yuriev)
s500 is already complete...and so the next generation as far as I remember.

russia always gives first to greece the second last version when the first is retained for russia only.

Many have s300, very few s400, but s500 is about to be delivered so that meana russia has already a new generation s1000????
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69761280

AFAIK, S-500 is still in development - in the final stages though. Radar is already complete, missiles are in work.
S-400 is a current top-notch being delivered to AF to replace S-300 that is the main "working horse" for now.

Meh, Russia is known for telling scary stories then never hearing about the threat again. Like the plans "leaked" on Russian TV for that stupid looking carbon nuke torpedo mini sub thing that isn't real.

I'll believe it when I see it
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 843585

Actually, this torpedo is a plan by Sakharov from 70s or so. Then it was scrapped due a number of reasons - main of them was the lack of sufficient electronics to guide such torpedo under water. My parents encountered some aftermath of it in 80s when they were engineers in one of "cosmic" institutions.
Now it was taken out from the archives. For reasons.

S-400 Triumf is scary enough.

And now we learn that there is an S-500?

Why is it so scary?? because they boast a lot about it and spread propaganda? Do you think Russia is the only country in the world capable of this type of missile technology?

Sorry friend. That logic doesn't apply to war. America has gotten this far by calling everyone's bluff for decades.

I understand in the lands surrounding Russia Ppl are afraid of Russian threats and ghost stories. But Russia is not dealing with old USSR countries here. They are dealing with America and America won't blink because you're talking about a scary weapon like other countries will.

It's just the way we are and it's served us well. It's proven to be correct also. If Russia wants to intimidate America they have to show us something to be afraid if. Not talk about it.

lol S400 is a great AA weapon, but nothing ground breaking, not compared to ours

it's formidable though, and can be loaded with tactical nukes

S-500 will just be an evolution, like going from the S300 of the early 1990s

America doesn't really talk about it's best tech. They just dare you to attack them and then they'll "show it to you".
You can't plan for what you haven't seen. Especially when what Ppl know we have is more than capable of dealing with any country.

It's a different approach than Russian intimidation. America never gives up a tactical advantage it doesn't have to.

Don't get me wrong. It's still a firm if intimidation. They just do it differently than Russia.

Re: Russian endgamer: S-500 will be the end game when it's finished (Mikhail Yuriev)
The S-500 is not an Anti Aircraft missile, its an Anti-NUKE missile. Just like the Western Missile Shield they wanted to put in place.

Its built for taking out ICBMS.

A similar missile is the Aster 30 Block 2 wide area defence capable against 3000 km-range ballistic missiles.

Aster 30 is capable of reaching speeds of Mach 4.5 while reaching altitudes of 20 km and is capable of performing aerial manoeuvres greater than 60 Gs giving it a very high degree of manoeuvrability.[10] This is thanks to the combination of aerodynamic control and the direct thrust vector control called "PIF-PAF".[1] Thrust vectors are intentionally located at the missile's centre of gravity maximising responsiveness.[10] This system also prevents a rupture of the missile under high-g maneuvers during trajectory corrections, and allows such maneuvers to be performed without losing aerodynamic performances, improving the precision of the impact on target. A standard launch of the Aster can include 90-degree trajectory changes.[11]
Eurosam describes Aster as a "hit-to-kill Missile Interceptor".[10]
The Aster missile is autonomously guided enabling it to cope with saturated attacks and is equipped with an active RF seeker.[1] The shipboard radar fulfills roles of sentry, meteo, target discrimination, acquisition and chase. When coupled with the advanced PAAMS air-defence system utilizing the SAMPSON and S1850M radars (as found on the British Type 45 destroyers), Aster is capable of simultaneously targeting and engaging multiple targets at once. MBDA states Aster is capable of "Multiple engagement capability with high rate of fire".

Well if it emits energy, there are missiles that are designed to identify such emissions, lock down a coordinate, fly to that location, scan for heat and visual signatures of radar site and then blow it up from more than 250 miles so...

It may indeed be a powerful Radar system but its very power exposes it to being destroyed by cruise missiles with high tech seeker heads designed to take out such things.

Until someone make a quantum weapon I think we just remain in a stale mate and who has the best technology and resources to use it.

Honestly it's kind of a shame that the US and Russia have been antagonistic against each other for so long. Both nations have the world's best scientists and engineers and could accomplish so much if they worked together. It has to be said the Russians really are producing military superb military equipment lately and I think all the war mongering from the west is in response to that. Without an alliance between Russia and the US I really don't see the world containing China anytime soon. There's the real threat to the world, but the Chinese are masters at long term and strategic planning so thus our leaders aren't seeing the danger while China quietly waits. They could lose 200 million in a war and it would probably benefit their society more then hurt it. Got to get rid of all those excess men somehow.

What? Think outside the box. Ground forces yes. But not necessarily them but do they have to be that close.

A TOW rocket for instance would work nicely. If they can get the rebels to donut for them. Or I guess if America can. In a full scale war tanks would do it probably.

S-500 nickname "Prometheus" - 500-600km range
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70042505

We prefer our names. In Russian it's nicknamed "Samoderzhets" - "Autocrat".

Answering the rest of the discussion - I don't see any meaning in quoting each and every post here - yeah, S-500 will be the anti-missile complex, not the anti-jet one. Which doesn't mean however that it can't be used against aerodynamic targets as well as against ballistic ones. That's for starters.

The number in the codename is a projected range for this type of armaments. So, yeah, about 500km range with at least 2/3 of it in altitude: i.e. it should be able to take down most of spy satellites. And surely all GPS satellites that are passing near.

Considering it's projected characteristics... It's made against American perspective hypersonic warheads. Those warheads are developed to be able to maneuver on hypersonic velocities, so the missiles of S-500 should be able to do better than that to intercept them. I.e. it's not just the "evolution" of S-300 or S-400, it's a completely different level of technology.
But no, S-500 is not alike to American anti-missile shield. Completely different philosophies here. American anti-missiles are made (and here's all meaning of having widespread Aegis system and stationary bases in Europe) to intercept ICBM while it's gaining. That's why Yuriev is pointing out that by changing the direction from which the missile comes you can negate American defences. All Russian countermeasures are centered on intercepting declining missile and its warhead.

Considering war tech propaganda. Yeah, you are somewhat right - and the readiness of Russia to show and demonstrate our weapons are actually a illustration that we don't want any war. If we wanted war, we'd just restored our war potential in secret to take everyone by surprise.

About Turkey - just placing S-400 in Latakia, we are covering half of Turkey, most of Israel and all Cyprus by our radars. Which are, by the way, hidden by our EW systems which exclude precision targeting and most of detection methods. It's quite enough. And I do believe that the base there is protected on the ground.
If Turkey goes full retard and tries to attack however, I'd say that the last thing that will worry them will be the state of affairs in Syria. It's almost exactly 500 km (Iskander-M range) from Crimean southern coast to Ankara...

Oh, and about rocket technologies. I'll concur that the general level of Russia and US is almost the same. But the different principles and axiomatic ideas make some things easier for us and some - for you. For example, NASA still lacks good enough liquid fuel rocket engine and is forced to by Russian-made. It does say something.
Apparently it was much easier for us to take and adapt electronics that was always an edge for Western rocket technologies, than for the West to adapt our technological processes.

Re: Russian endgamer: S-500 will be the end game when it's finished (Mikhail Yuriev)
I'd say, Russia is unlikely to use nukes if it's not completely necessary. And if S-500 is finished it will be just "fire what you want at us, we are waiting".
But if we won't be ready... MAD is still the main system here. And the Dead Hand would be enacted if Russia is under threat of nuclear war.
 Quoting: Tamonten

I think MAD will always apply, no matter the defense systems that are developed.

Weapons systems always have an advantage over defenses.

The US has about 2,000 long range nuclear weapons, if fired all at once at least a few will get through... plus a few thousand nuclear cores broken apart in the upper atmosphere would be like a dirty bomb attack over the whole country.

And such a system would still require the people in charge of launching a first strike to have 100% confidence in it's effectiveness, which is unlikely.

Plus, anything short of a full on destruction of the US would surely result in a large conventional ground war plus a total destruction of the world economy.

But detonating enough nukes to wipe the US off the map would have devastating effects on the planet... which would be the real unavoidable MAD that would reach all the way back to Russia.

And warheads could be detonated in the upper atmosphere out of range of the interceptor missiles causing an EMP wave that would devastate electronics on a massive scale.

Let's hope cooler heads prevail among both our nation's leaders, so that we never have to find out exactly how it would go down.

I'll just note that Russia is much less dependent on electronics in our everyday life. In this meaning US is much more vulnerable to the EMP.
There's also the thing that Moscow at least (and several adjoining regions by extension) is under protection of Amurs that can intercept even EMP bombs and dirty bombs.
There's also the thing that Russian people are much more psychologically strong towards large loses - in WW2 we lost 27 mln people, about 15% of total population of SU. That - and the fact that Russian population is unevenly dissipated across the country - makes it virtually impossible to deal to Russia damage that will make us surrender.

But, yeah. MAD still stands. At least till the time when something completely different appears.

If you read the news a bit (not the MSM one though) you'd discover that the half of things mentioned in the video is now in use in Syria. Tasting that very "actual battle".
