I remember being in DC for leave one year in 2004, and just people watching this handbag stand on a pedestrian street corner just outside of Georgetown. It happened in waves; as soon as one woman would come up and start digging through the bags, it appeared that alone would attract other women to do the same, and prolifically so. If no one was at the stand, women would seemingly pass. Anecdotal to be sure, but noticeable. Women's role as gatherers and selectors; of good berries, good birds eggs, the right fibers for textiles were important evolutionarily perhaps? And having the awareness to aggregate to where "the getting is good" so to speak could be beneficial. Compare this to "lookism" today where women browse and select, browse and select,its really not a departure at all. True... Never fails. Go into a department store with a women. Ask her to look 'really interested in an item. Other women will follow to look at the same item. Every single time. Ive always thought that this had to do with social conditioning. Women are taught to value themselves based on what others around them have. If a women has a downgrade in something ( a material possession or for example a friend that is of a lower socioeconomic status) they will be socially reprimanded for it. That's where the idea of ' oh that other person has that it must be good' comes into play. If I spend money, it's more about being lazy and having a good time. |
