Gamers discussion on multiplayer game
Hey all,

I am the ambassador with the press play public development group. If we have any gamers out there who are interested in helping make a game please join the "inner circle". Play the very rough game and give your input on the forums.

My question is to the people who play multiplayer games. What sets apart games like destiny that is still going strong. Considering destiny is a console only game and this game will most likely be console only vs other multiplayer games like titanfall that died out pretty quickly? I've never played destiny this is just off of research. For me I feel a game need to have a campaign. Because years go by you might want to pick that game up again. When you go to play it if there is no one playing it anymore... It's just done.

I used to be an fps guy but it's just kinda boring now. I havnt tried titan fall or destiny but i personally believe Dota, LOL, and Hots is the way to go if you wanna make a popular game, just because of the endless amount of strategy involved in those types of games is so entertaining.

FPS games are good but there is a falling out cause it's a been there done that cause there's so many now and not enough revolutionary changed to it, I dunno what ideas would be so but I feel it would be too little too late.

Multiplayer games with the most longevity have one thing in common... high skill ceiling, high skill ceiling is extremely rewarding and also addictive.

The games that fail are just loaded with gimmicks, like explosion, cinematic, graphics and other stupid gimmicks.

Counter-strike 1.6
Warcraft 3
Dota and dota2
Starcraft 1 and 2

These games all have high skill ceiling it's the reason of their success.

I've played counter strike for 11 years in still not bored of it, there literally is no limit to how good you can get.

So, you would say that is the number 1 reason those games are still in play? For me it's all about the story. I love a game with a good story. The multiplayer has always just been a bonus. Besides wow back in the day I was never into multiplayer only games

This and non of that pay to win shit either.

Start on PC. Love the PC and focus only on the PC.

Then port it to console. But only after its a well established PC game.

The game should be so balanced every single person can approach the same objective and all have a different out comes.

Lack of loading. Lack of in depth menus and counter intuitive control schemes. Constant FPS without drop offs or dips or stuttering.

And if you really want to win fans, multi player co-op especially on a console port. And make it easy for players to build community's like in Dayz but without clan tags or names displayed to keep it simple.

All the sounds have to be rich and powerful sounding.

The game can be easy or hard but as long as there is excitement it will do good. Like racing games have me on the edge of my seat and I jump up when I win or counter strike leaves my arm shaky after an intense round.

Bah, MMO's have lost their luster. I've been playing them on and off since the golden days of UO. They are a get rich quick scheme basically now. Doll up your bad to mediocre gameplay MMO with fancypants graphics or a blockbuster franchise, throw a $50-$60 price tag on it and then charge monthly fees! Make millions off the inital hype, then it becomes known you have a bad game and people shun it.

Re: Gamers discussion on multiplayer game
100%

Counter strike never even had a campaign mode, I personally all I look for in games is skill required not story but I'm sure you could create a game with both.

Skill ceiling comes from game mechanics, game mechanics a player can manipulate, Counter strike for example had bugs that ended up being apart of the game for the better as the bugs took skill to master.

There is only so much a story and graphics can achieve but they will never make a game great, if it doesn't have fluid and challenging gameplay it won't last long at all.

If you look at the most popular games on mobile devices you will see most are extremely simple with challenging game mechanics, e.g. angry birds.

Just checked your video out, looks fun, it is also important to make the gamer to feel like his character is powerful like "I really fucked that guy up" best way to do that is to use good sounds and animations. Blizzard games are a good example of that.

If its a survival game then you should research survival.

Do you know what standing on a frozen lake and hearing the ice crack sound like? Put that into your game.

The sound of howling wind between rocks...

Random storms, fogs and white outs. Black ice.

Every game Ive played lacks a shovel. The only time a shovel is given is if its a weapon. I want a real shovel used for digging holes or building trenches.

Base building, this game needs base building of some kind but make it so hard they have to spend over 200hrs as a group building a lousy fort.

In Heros and Generals they made it so when you are standing on the roof of a building your characters legs adjust to the vertical geometry. Do that but with your character sliding or rolling down a snowy hill.

Make it so you can mute everybody with a single command or individually mute a player.

There should defiantly be a magnifying glass of some kind in this game. Make it rare and give it some special property's or just a high value.

The animals, monsters and general enemy's should have better tactics and AI. They shouldn't just rush you, they should corner you like an intelligent predator. Or maybe they will just run away if you have a torch or are with friends.

In Regards to your comment about muting players. As it looks it will not be used with headsets. Or I should say you won't have to. There will be certain symbols that are used to communicate. You can chose to help or hurt people. Once you die there is an afterlife system. You collect coins thought out the game and use those coins when you die to set traps on other players. Like placing quicksand or portals that they fall into that will place them somewhere else on the map..

My only fear with suggestions is that you take them seriously.

I mean if someone gave you 100 goofy ideas and you take all 100 ideas and put them into a game then you got a goofy game.

I wouldn't want it to turn out like TF2 or Bomberman...

But here are some more ideas just to get those creative juices going.

Tie someones hands together and leave them for death?

Put a spyglass into the game?

Sparkling water?

A meteor or shooting star every half hour at night?

Fire crackers scare smaller groups of animals away? Like repellent in Pokemon? but it also gives your position away like if you use one in a cave or a valley.

The hard part about making a good modern game is not the ideas but the depth.

Heres an example of depth.

If two guys run up to each other with spears the guy with lower stamina or health should react slower then the guy who is fully rested. This should apply to all combat even the animations of the tired/wounded guy should be slower and almost desperate with blocks susceptible to failure.

But the tired/weakened animation shouldn't be so noticeable someone from a distance sees you in a weakened state and rushes you because that would lead to griefing.

A good place to find depth is to look at older consoles like the dream cast or even ps2 and see what kind of things they got away with on limited hardware.

Games had allot of depth in them back then. Might help to go through them.

Re: Gamers discussion on multiplayer game
So, a multiplayer co-op that actively encourages players to go grim-trigger, allows non-players to sabotage others game play, and has a 'revenge' feature by intended design?

Sure... that'll be soooo much fun. It'd be like playing a WoW random-bg with friendly fire on right after school lets out with all weapons disabled but rocket launchers.....

Surely you understand to maintain a community for a game you generally need to appeal to players who've gotten through puberty?

If you're going to go the hunger games route, just drop the pretext of co-op, or go full team, non random player based.

The best features of WoW, LoL, CoD.. etc. Multiplayer are the self organizing premade team type. Or the veg out and just kill things types. DOOM to your game if you try to mix them.
