Most people don't want to start stuff even in the roughest of times, just bluff that you do have a gun, and there's always things like hot water and big rocks to hit people with.

This !!! And if u can't afford that spend $20 on a can of foxlabs brand 5.3 million SHU pepper spray . Get the foam for indoor use ,it WILL take them down immediately and they WILL flop like a chicken for about 25 min on the ground.
Trust me, I've been tazed and I've been hit with this shit in my training and I would rather be tazed ANY DAY of the week than to ever be hit with the 5.3 SHU ever again!!!

There are a lot of preps you can do for little to no money.

First I'd try to make friends with some of your neighbors if you have any close by & they're amicable. In a SHTF type scenario, 10 people will be better able to defend than 1-2 people. Plus that also opens the possibility of weapons sharing.

I don't know what type of physical condition you're in, but I would suggest starting with some type of combat/defense training. You obviously have internet access, so try looking up videos on YouTube. You can probably pick up some good basics there. If you have a wife & kids, maybe get them involved too. Also, your local library is an excellent free resource. I would look for military-type training manuals, there are a lot of WW2-era ones out there (like "Get Tough" for the Brit Commandos) that are very good & would give you some defense tactics.

I would also do a "walk around" to check & evaluate your home. Check locks on windows, make sure all windows & doors close properly & without cracks or damage. If anything does have damage, unsecure doors, etc., fix it as best you can. Trim down shrubs around windows to minimize hiding spots for potential burglars. Make a tape or mp3 recording of a big scary dog barking, that can be used when folks come near the home. Sometimes that's enough to scare off a potential intruder.

As far as weapons, a slingshot, sharpened sticks/spear, a medieval-type mace or a garotte (worst case scenario) could all probably be made fairly easily from items you probably already have. If you have any cash available at all, watch yard sales or flea markets for items that could be used as weapons if needed - axes, picks, baseball bat, etc. You can usually find machetes fairly cheap if you have a surplus store anywhere near you.

You can buy a cheap shotgun for around $150 then buy some ammo, enough to defend yourself.

Me personally? I have no friends, I am an anti social introvert, I do what I can, work, and play video games. If I come across anyone after a collapse, I am treating those people as potential liabilities, Who are hostile to me and my well being. I think I would be taken care of when it comes to acquiring food and supplies.

On a darker note. I always imagine myself as being a trapdoor spider, and anyone who gets close enough for me to snatch, and drag into my hole, will become a meal. This goes for animals and humans alike. Have enough of a stash for when I am found, I can release a large ammount of ultra-violent attrition; enough to blast off and get away from the hot zone. Then if that is the case I would become a brown recluse, hunting at night, while taking cover during the day. I would liken myself to the lone wanderer, until I finally meet my demise. I am paranoid,and will likely back stab those close to me, just as I would expect them to do the same to myself. Maybe gather a couple breeders to keep in cages, then rear their offspring myself, teaching them the ways of destruction, and subterfuge.

In it for a fun time, not a long time. Live and learn, crash and burn, gotta survive, and await your final turn.

You can look up backyard bowyer's videos on youtube and find out how to make a bow out of PVC pipe. Don't bother with wood bows, wood bows take years of skill to make and they don't have the toughness that a durable PVC bow has.

You can practice making the bows he shows out of 3/4" PVC pipe but for practical purposes you want to only make them out of 1" PVC, because the 3/4" tops out at about 45 pounds of draw weight. The 1" will make 50 to 100 pounds of draw weight, which is much better for hunting and combat.

Hop on craigs list and get a used compound bow & some arrows. practice practice practice. bows require a lot of skill & lots o practice is the only way to acquire said skills.

Do not use sights or a mechanical release. get a bow at least 35 inches long so it can be shot using your fingers.

This is known as natural shooting. start out at 30 ft or so. your body will learn to aim, you need to work on form. when your form perfects your groups will get small & then your aim will come & soon they will go where you want them.

then double that distance to 20 yards & keep practicing. when your hitting with confidence add ten yards till you're out to fifty. this is going to be about your max effective range.

Three months ago I was about 30 sec per arrow & barley hitting target face, now I'm 1.5 sec per shot & hitting point of aim nine out of ten.

Get good broad-heads & set up several arrows to use for real & then a set with field tips for practice. make sure field tips and broad-heads are of the same weight. use one broad-head arrow to practice here and there as broad-heads can alter the flight of an arrow. You may need to compensate for such changes and in the moment will be the wrong time to find that out.

Don't go larger than 40pound to start, Bow draw weight. if you go too heavy you will never be able to establish proper form & as a result will never gain any consistency.

I have a forty I shoot the most & my baby is a Hoyt tribute at 70lbs pull. You have to be very strong to shoot it. I can only fire about twenty shots from that one before my form goes to shit & I start missing. I can shoot the forty all day.

If he still wants at you, simply hold the lighter in front of the nozzle and squirt. Just a quick burst and your intruder is now toast.
Should be an easily containable fire with a small extinguisher or blanket.
If crispy joe pulls a Max Cady on you and comes back from the dead, simply repeat...

Being a nomad is not for everyone.
Yet trying to defend a home in a big city is fruitless. mainly because once city water no longer operates, you will have to relocate or die of thirst. Let alone the gangs and looters that will come to take your stuff.
The longer you stay put, the more time highwaymen groups will have to organize and perfect traps to attack travelers.
So having a remote bug out location and quickly heading there, is the best bet.
