This is fiction, but reality will be more or less the same.
The reason why it is fiction is because earth as we know it can't be maintained by 500mil people, in order for that to be true you need a lot more automation and robotics.
So, is this coming?
Yes probably.
Anytime soon?
Only when robotics are mature and hybrid humans (robotic parts/can live hundreds of years) start emerging.
Then we will see the elite transform into biologically undying cyborgs and the poor become absolutely useless.
That's when we will see mass depopulation.
