I cannot speak for every consciousness that has taken form, but what many people are, is a cybernetic organism that is hooked into a layered reality.
On the very bottom, people assume their fears and project them onto others.
At the very top people assume their desires and project them onto others.
At no point does anyone escape their own reality unless they die and return immediately with full awareness of the event, or if they come from another system and take on the form of someone who dies.

There are versions of you in the future and the past all connected to you. The higher self is that of you from forward in motion. People experience reality after it has occurred already. And when you die you meet face to face with everything you ever did. Every version of you. Every mistake you ever made. Or you can choose to do that while you're still here to make the process much easier. About the only choice people have in the matter, is what they want the most will anchor them to a time line. Most of what you say is what you desire. Something to consider, because if you cannot formulate a reality base for this, it is not going to happen. What I am saying here is you have to be able to see how this works, whilst complying with the Universes law.
