Spy planes 'join war on yobs' By BEN ASHFORD October 16, 2006 MILITARY spy planes could be used to patrol troubled streets in a crackdown on yobs, it emerged yesterday. The aircraft — which usually monitor enemy troops in Iraq and Afghanistan — would fly over areas of Liverpool blighted by anti-social behaviour. Merseyside Police confirmed it is one of a number of ideas being considered by the UK’s first ‘Yob Squad’. The new Anti-Social Behaviour Task Force includes police, the fire service and lawyers. Simon Byrne, Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, said: “I am really excited by this ground-breaking idea. We are acutely aware of how anti-social behaviour can blight communities and people’s lives.” The hi-tech drones — with a 2ft wingspan — can pick out an object the size of a football from hundreds of feet up. Other technologies being considered include metal detecting gloves which will alert officers to suspects carrying objects like knives and CCTV headcams for gathering evidence. And new powers open to the Yob Squad include seizure of cars being driven without insurance, scrambler bikes being driven anti-socially and property gained illegally. Anti-social and criminal families could also find themselves evicted from their home. [link to www.thesun.co.uk] |
