The Old New Colossus

Have you ever heard of a poem called, “The New Colossus”? No? Didn’t think so. Have you ever heard of Emma Lazarus? It’s ok if you haven’t; not many people remember her. She wrote that poem. Not many people remember it either except for one line out of it. I only bring it up because you’ll likely be hearing that one line a lot in the wake of the colossal can of worms that our boy Trump has opened.

In case you’ve been busy in the last 72 hours let me recap: Donald Trump would like to temporarily ban all immigration into the US by Muslims. If you follow the will of Allah, you will not be welcome here. The usual parties and even some unusual ones got all upset of course. There’s been much clutching of pearls and wadding up of panties. Someone at the White House dug out a dictionary and hit on the term, “vacuous” to describe Trump’s plan.

They also flung in a snipe about him having “fake hair”. Whoa. Talk about hitting below the hair line.

At any rate, I should be most surprised if by now some talk show pundit, like one of those aging boards on “The View,” or some talking head on the news hasn’t recited that one line of “The New Colossus” to make their point in how evil they feel Trump is.

With eyes raised to the sky, hand over heart, and we all know they have so much more heart than you or I, they will strike a profound pose and recite:

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”

With those words dripping from their lips, they’ll assume the air of a warrior of justice, who, with those magic words have yielded the sword of truth against Trump and his supporters. Racist, bigots go away! Poof!

All they’ve really done is parrot an overused line from a piece that’s outlived its usefulness.

Yeah, I said that. I just went there. If you have any beads to clutch, grab ‘em now ‘cause I’m about to go further.

Emma Lazarus wrote the piece in 1883 for use in an auction of art and literary works to help fund the building of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. At that time, Lazarus had been heavily involved in assisting thousands of Jewish immigrants settle into New York.

These people, people of her own faith, had been taking refuge from Russia and other eastern European countries where rulers, with might on permanent loan from God, had been making life hell for them. It was their plight that moved her to describe them as “huddled masses”. The ruling classes of Europe saw them exactly as she’d depicted them: “wretched refuse” and were delighted to push them away from their “teeming shore” to our seemingly golden one.

Once here, the “tired and poor” faced uphill battles but they set to them with a will. They were going to be free. They kept their faith, their food, and some aspects of their mother tongue and culture but by God, they were going to be Americans!

And therein lays a tale of two centuries of immigrants: those who were happy to begin anew vs. those who are panting to replace the new with the old all for the glory of their God.

The ones that Donald Trump and that a lot of Americans are troubled about, aren’t coming here all smiles, snatches of song and tins of Halva. They are coming here not to take part in the grand experiment of democracy but rather, to put an end to it.

These people, mostly young men, do not look forward to learning the language or the customs of the country. Rather, they look forward to a day when all shall live under the customs of their old country. All shall obey Sharia, every knee shall bow to their Allah, or every neck shall be barred to their sword.

This would certainly and most especially include the very people Emma Lazarus sought to protect; the Jews. Her desire for their continued existence extended to having a special homeland established just for them so that they could be safe. Until then, the land beyond the “air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame” would have to do.

That land is now under attack. Donald Trump sees it. A lot of decent Americans who sleep on sheets rather than wear them see it. However, an elected official and his fellows do not see it. They pontificate a blue streak how those who seek to keep people out are hateful beings akin to Nazis.

Trump has, in the words of this administration, “disqualified” himself to be president. Oh, really? And who are you to say this? The last I checked, we the people were the ones to make this call, not you.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp…” wrote Lazarus.
Too bad a village in Kenya didn’t do just that.

Lazarus penned “The New Colossus” for an auction she was at first reluctant to participate in. As it was, the piece was largely forgotten until 1903 when her friends, seeking to memorialize her, had it cast in bronze and mounted in the inner wall of Lady Liberty’s pedestal. It was official: America was now the inn-keeper of the world.

I wonder what she would think if she were here now, watching this juggernaut of violence making inroads into her country. Would she be willing to roll the dice with American lives just so as not to be seen as “vacuous”?

Or would she wish to go back in time, take the sheet holding her verse and sacrifice it to the nearest wastebasket or fireplace lest someone take her prose and twist it into being holy writ?

The old New Colossus; what on earth does she stand for now? Protection for the rights of those demanding entry? Or for the right of protection for those already within her “golden door”.

Your vote in the coming elections will decide this. Please, choose wisely.

Re: Another thought "From a friend"
Thank you for posting this. I've never heard much of what I read. Most definitely a 5 star thread and I am thrilled it is pinned!

The fact that these wretched people omit is when those huddled masses arrived, they were quarantined and had to have some type of identification (if you've never seen the old birth certificates, look them up---absolutely beautiful). They had to earn their own way due to there being very little & next to nothing in the way of church charity, and they had to learn our American ways.

The rest of my post is for anyone who desires to hear a personal view & know more about citizenship testing and fulfillment that were as recent as the mid-late 50's. I am unsure of how they compare to current day legal requirements.

My step grandpa came over in 1956. He kept the 2 letters from his representatives that welcomed him as a citizen his entire life and I have them now. That is how much he cherished becoming an American. These were not his citizenship papers, simply the welcome letters. I also have a book he had to study about our form of government, a constitutional republic. He had to know the Bill of Rights and the amendments, and had to pass the tests on all of this information.

He had to have 3 "in good standing" American citizens from his community notarize paperwork vouching for him. He had to have a skill set that was valued and could be utilized as employment here (he did his apprenticeship in London and was a master printer). I also have the Daughters of the American Revolution booklet that he had to study and be tested on.

This is my main concern with illegal aliens (whether from Mexico, Venezuela, or from across the pond and illegally going through Mexico). They do not go through this process and learn the value of being an American. That is why the people who do go through the process legally do value it---it requires studying, knowing the language, knowing our government, knowing the requirements of being a citizen.

In one of his study books, it gives direction to hire a tutor or take night classes to learn English if you do not know or speak the language. The tests that would be required to pass were in the English language only. And the verbal section of the test would not allow a translator to be present.

It is more than voting in an election. It is being involved in your community and adding value, and taking pride in how much or how little you do earn. It is calling out Americans who are not acting American!

(I hope I have added valuable insight to your thread, op. If you desire me to edit something out, let me know and I will update my post)..

Well written OP Doomamatrix. Funny how the Jews were run out of every country in Europe. Like high-end gypsies their money lending practices tended to piss people off. I guess they're getting the last laugh now with the Federal Reserve and World Bank and BIS. All that fake money now controlling the world - quite the trick!

But yes, Trump is right. Islam is antithetical to Western values and rather than adding through diversity they seek to subjugate and destroy. They laugh at us behind our backs thinking how Godless and corrupt we are how we are deserving to be conquered in the name of Allah. Obama is laughing too.

Re: Another thought "From a friend"
If consider The Jewish Influence on America, is there that much at odds with their Semite cousins who seek sharia law and the other trappings of their "civilization"?

Consider the impact Jewish politicians and lawyers have had on our Nation. The spirit of their "liberalism" which motivated their being torchbearers for "reform" in America, but going so overboard and beyond.

Liberal Jews have been at the forefront of reform in America, and have through their unwillingness to accept and work with what was early 20th century America, brought it down rather than furthered its social and economic growth.

Where the Muslim has a fanatical devotion to their religion and holy book, the Jew has tradition since Rabbinical reform 200yrs after Christ of argument and rationalization for their behavior and life choices. Hair-Splitting is their way, and living by such rationalized self-will they believe whatever they desire in life can be possible and should function.

Perhaps there is no tradition of honor killing and street beheading, but to what degree has Jewish Rationalized Social Expectation murdered and decapitated The America they found when the main wave of Eastern European Jews arrived after WW-I?

Did the liberal Earl Warren court serve America's best interests? Have Jewish senators and congressmen sponsored legislation which preserved and conserved American Values and Morals? Not typically.

The Semite cousins are a negative affect on Western Culture. Contemporary Jews have a religion based on rationalization of self, while Arab Muslims have spread their rigid book-adherent religion through violence against the followers they seek to convert.

The Khazar Jew immigration and influence on America has not been a "good thing". Destruction of the Nation that allowed them to flourish is not the desired result of a well-reasoned citizen or sub-culture.

Look back and see the impact the Khazars have had on America in Education, Arts, Business, Finance, Law, and Politics and you will see who moved America from its foundational morals and values.

So your filthy, smelly, disgusting grandparents, fresh off the boat from BFE, they were OK. They were Huddled Masses. The people coming now to escape wan and hunger, they are the devil incarnate? You are afraid of them because you are cowards. You despise them because you can get away with it in a crowd. Look at yourself and be ashamed.

I have seen dictators before; Trump is a dictator wannabe and you are trying to elect him. Make no mistake, after he's done with the Muslims and the Mexicans, he's coming after you.
