A Foolish Take: Here's how much debt the average U.S. household owes The average American household carries $137,063 in debt, according to the Federal Reserve's latest numbers. Yet the U.S. Census Bureau reports that the median household income was just $59,039 last year, suggesting that many Americans are living beyond their means. Here's how much debt the average U.S. household owes in credit cards, auto loans, student loans, and mortgages. [link to www.usatoday.com (secure)] This Is How Much Debt the Average American Has Now—at Every Age Total household debt—a category that includes mortgages, student loans, and car loans along with credit card and other debt—dipped in the wake of the Great Recession, but it has since steadily rebounded in the years since. Overall, Americans’ debt hit a new high of $13 trillion last year, surpassing the previous record set in 2008 by $280 billion, according to the New York Fed. Under 35: $67,400 35–44: $133,100 45–54: $134,600 55–64: $108,300 65–74: $66,000 75 and up: $34,500 [link to time.com] The average U.S. household debt continues to rise So, what do the numbers look like? According to recent data compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total credit card balances amounted to $784 billion in the second quarter of 2017 — a $20 billion increase from the previous quarter. Indeed, the cost of living has been rising — but wages haven’t kept up. As of 2014, median income plummeted by 13 percent from 2004 levels while expenditures increased by nearly 14 percent. The project uses standardized measurements to calculate the “bare bones” household budget in each county in each state. It maintains that the federal poverty level — currently $25,100 for a family of four — doesn’t accurately illustrate the number of people living in poverty because it doesn’t take into account the dramatically different costs of living across the U.S. [link to www.marketwatch.com (secure)] Sure, Unemployment Went Down - Because More People Left The Workforce Quoting: Seer777 The number of jobs increased by 164,000 in April. The net effect is a ‘perfect demographic storm’ that will imperil economic growth across the continent [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)] From link.. Fewer and fewer people have savings to weather time between jobs or an emergency expense. A third of the U.S. population has no savings and another third has saved less than $1,000. Two-thirds of American households, by this measure, are desperately scrambling to make ends meet from check to check. Nearly half the American population earns too little to live on comfortably: One-third of all workers earn less than $12 an hour and 42% earn less than $15. That’s $24,960 and $31,200 a year. Imagine raising a family on such incomes, figuring in the cost of food, rent, childcare, car payments (since a car is often a necessity simply to get to a job in a country with inadequate public transportation), and medical costs. Even in households that combine income from two wage-earners, it’s rarely enough to live on without anxieties about money. It takes an average of a little more than $100,000 per year now for a household to be able to live without anxieties about money. Because mainstream and social media have redefined "comfort" living so that no middle income family can keep up without living in debt through credit. They want you to believe $200/mo on your cable package is necessary. That your kids all need iPads and cell phones by the time they're 10. Ect ect. This is ALL to get people in more and more credit debt, and families on anxiety meds. Get rid of the cable, cell phones, and $500+ car payments, you can live quite well on the average mean salary of $55k. Having cable, a cell phone, and a car payment, is no measure of wealth.
