Bread and Circuses

"Bread and circuses" (or bread and games; from Latin: panem et circenses) is a figure of speech, specifically referring to a superficial means of appeasement. As a metonymic, the phrase is attributed to Juvenal, a Roman poet active in the late first and early second century AD — and is used commonly in cultural, particularly political, contexts.

In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace[1] — by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses).

Juvenal, who originated the phrase, used it to decry the selfishness of common people and their neglect of wider concerns. The phrase implies a population's erosion or ignorance of civic duty as a priority.

Thread: Dennis Hof dead at 72: Bunny Ranch owner and GOP candidate is found 'unresponsive' in bed at his infamous Nevada brothel by porn star Ron Je
[link to www.dailymail.co.uk (secure)]

The famed owner of The Bunny Ranch brothel has passed away.

Dennis Hof died on Tuesday at the age of 72 his campaign manager revealed, just a few weeks before he was set to compete in the general election for a seat in the House of Representatives and hours after a campaign rally.

He was at the Love Ranch South in Crystal at the time of his death and the Nye County Sheriff's Office is on the scene and investigating Hof's death.

His chief of staff Zach Hames told DailyMail.com 'we are all pretty much devastated. Last night he was fine at the campaign rally.

'Ron Jeremy went to wake up Dennis about 11am this morning and found him dead in his bed. He must have died in his sleep.'

Hours prior the two men had been celebrating Hof's birthday with friends including Heidi Fleiss.

these tangential references indicate that the intended reader of the Satires was highly educated.[3] The Satires are concerned with perceived threats to the social continuity of the Roman citizens: social-climbing foreigners, unfaithfulness, and other more extreme excesses of their own class. The intended audience of the Satires constituted a subset of the Roman elite, primarily adult males of a more conservative social stance.

lines 10.56–89—It is all too easy to fall from power – like Sejanus. The mob follows Fortuna and cares for nothing but bread and circuses.

The narrative frame of this poem is a dinner party where many potential dysfunctions in the ideal of the patron-client relationship are put on display. Rather than being a performance of faux-equality, the patron (Virro as in 9.35) emphasizes the superiority of himself and his peers (amici) over his clients (viles amici) by offering food and drink of unequal quality to each. Juvenal concludes with the observation that the clients who put up with this treatment deserve it.

 Rich…

For wealthy Romans, life was good. They lived in beautiful houses – often on the hills outside Rome, away from the noise and the smell. They enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle with luxurious furnishings, surrounded by servants and slaves to cater to their every desire. Many would hold exclusive dinner parties and serve their guests the exotic dishes of the day.

…and poor

Poorer Romans, however, could only dream of such a life. Sweating it out in the city, they lived in shabby, squalid houses that could collapse or burn at any moment. If times were hard, they might abandon newborn babies to the streets, hoping that someone else would take them in as a servant or slave. Poor in wealth but strong in numbers, they were the Roman mob, who relaxed in front of the popular entertainment of the time – chariot races between opposing teams, or gladiators fighting for their life, fame and fortune.

Thread: Chinese 'gait recognition' tech IDs people by how they walk
Chinese authorities have begun deploying a new surveillance tool: "gait recognition" software that uses people's body shapes and how they walk to identify them, even when their faces are hidden from cameras.

Already used by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai, "gait recognition" is part of a push across China to develop artificial-intelligence and data-driven surveillance that is raising concern about how far the technology will go.

Probably the most important thing you need to understand is that the leaders of your societies made a choice to go with destructive science rather than constructive science as a basis for their publicly released engineering.

They did this because they could not control, meter, and sell, the principles behind constructive science or 'cold energy'.

There is what you understand as electricity, we can call it 'hot electricity', but there is also 'cold electricity'.

Cold electricity is abundant and conductive to life. Hot electricity must be created and is destructive to life.

Our entire society has been undermined from the beginning because those in control of industry and science made a choice long ago to control and enslave the people rather than set them free.

To this day control of energy is the basis for their control over society.

PERIOD

You change that one single element, the world will be changed for the better, forever.

Channelers are not born equal; some are stronger in the Power and can handle more of it than others. Men and women who can channel are different in this respect and in many others, regarding the One Power. For example, male channellers can on average channel more of the Power than female channelers, similar to the gendered difference in physical strength.

Channelers must always be careful, as the One Power is dangerous. Besides providing an addictive stimulating effect, channelers who draw too much of the Power into themselves can kill themselves or render themselves brain-dead. If they are lucky--relatively speaking--they will only burn the ability to channel out of themselves, leaving them unable to channel ever again.

Severing a person from the ability to channel is considered by most to be worse than death. A severed channeler can still feel saidin's or saidar's presence, but they can no longer seize or embrace it. It is often described to be as if part of the channeler itself has been cut away. In men, the experience of being severed is described as similar to castration.

Without the ecstasy of the One Power within themselves, those who are severed usually lose the will to live, and will often die of various direct causes connected to this.

Death after being severed is commonly caused by suicide, refusing to eat or drink, or simply becoming too weak to continue living.

I overloaded my brain a few years ago and have since lost the ability to channel. It is every bit as described above in terms of there is a feeling of having something cut away. I do not see this thing that was cut away as anything more than training wheels though, however there are no books or guides on how to dream without a channel for creative influence.
In a sense it is like I have to create my own 'dream' now but I know they are my own illusion in a sense, ergo I know I am only acting to pass time and satisfy peoples expectations.

This can be seen as a loss or an opportunity. Obviously having the 'training' wheels off without knowing how to ride is frustrating but not the end of the world for me personally.
