Classic French Aligot

2 pounds mashing potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground white pepper
4 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup creme fraiche, or substitute equal parts sour cream and heavy cream
1 clove garlic, lightly crushed, but kept intact
3 cups Cantal cheese, or substitute good-quality grated sharp cheddar

Thank you. It will be the first without a couple of family members and having not seen my own parents in almost 2 years, it is bittersweet.

Thanksgiving was always a huge deal in my family. Lots of of aunts, uncles and cousins and kids. Sometimes there were 20+ pies.

I woke this morning at 3:14am and thought that was perfect for pie day.

It was fun in the 80s, 90s, and aughts. Still fun but not like it was.

Christmas was the big one here. Fond 90s memories before drama in the family put an end to it lol.

More "walks" probably would have helped relax that situation for em. Alcohol did not

Thanksgiving was for my dad's side of the family. Christmas was with my mom's side, up North.

Both traditions have near disappeared over the last 5 years and with Covid have ceased altogether.

Maybe next year we'll have more semblance of normalcy. One can hope.

Varied by year here for myself really...preferred dads...they still do big family gatherings lol.

Remember a number of years ago when my young sister(probably 6-7) sighed and said it doesn't feel like Christmas anymore. Think a lot of the "magic" of the times vanished for many under the stresses of the world.

Here's hoping for next year...tho I don't know if I'd put money on it heh

I haven't logged into my FB account even once, since Oct 2016. I saw what the awful politics was doing to family members by pitting them against each other and I chose to opt out completely, before it sullied my opinion of people I had spent my life caring about and having fond memories of.

Ever since, it seems like I've totally lost contact with all of my extended family members because I choose not to FB.

Everybody used FB to keep in touch and then fell out of touch because of FB, and then forgot how to get back in touch IRL. Or maybe didn't want to.

Connected and disconnected simultaneously.

Is this not a regular occurrence as a “Seer” when it comes to people and wavelengths?

I think it goes for everyone as it was a general statement about FB as an entity in facilitating both communication and destruction of relationship through nefarious algorithms and dirty politics.

I just didn't want to see it at all, so I opted out. Completely. Never went back.

Only have a fb account due to one being made for me by friends while backpacking. Was good in that situation...before everyone and their mum started using it and it turned into what it is now. Have not made a post or updated it in years, think the pic of me on there is over a decade old.

It's the drunken arguments at the table, people feeling the net is a shield... and without all the body languages and chemicals from actual interaction...not to mention how divided the vocal ones have become...

Mostly I was upset how it seemed to ruin my parents relationships with people they'd spent a lifetime with. Especially if they were already shaky. Politics was like adding gasoline.


I recall watching the movie Sleepers in the 90s and when they all sit down at the bar and he says to a guy who is talking about politics..No politics or religion at the bar.

It made perfect sense to me, why such a simple statement was absolutely true.


At the same time, talking observationally and objectively about 'politics and religion' is still avoided, while the former is now fair game in internet web bars everywhere.

Funny how both those topics not only require a person's faith, but once in people rarely leave.
Even if they oppose what their own "kind" is doing... still they will go to blows over it.
Doubt you'd find a republican/democrat who agrees with everything their choosen side does...but they'll still go to war over defending that belief.
Grateful Christians aren't stoning adulters or those who worship "false idols"...
They still scream its the word of God and to be obeyed utterly.
