Re: Mad World
Male channelers as a whole usually are much stronger in the amount of power that they can hold than female channelers of comparable level (in much the same way men are generally stronger in their muscles than women) but the female can compensate this lack of brute force with far more dexterity. So in all the things that only rough power is not needed, the strongest female channelers can accomplish with the One Power, exactly the same as the strongest male.

An advantage of the female is also that only a woman can start the link for a circle, while men cannot link to form a circle of multiple channelers working together without a woman's aid. Women are more dexterous in the actual weaving of the flows, and have the advantage of linking, but cannot increase a circle beyond thirteen without the inclusion of men.

When a male channeler and a female channeler work together they are much stronger than many of the same gender, it is said that this is caused by saidin and saidar resonating, which means that the two Powers are working better together.

Re: Mad World
Wilders

A wilder is a collective term for women who have learned to channel the One Power on their own, without formal education or particular skill. It can be a derogatory term, especially when used by certain Aes Sedai who went to the White Tower to train, although at other times it is simply used as a descriptor. The term has not been used for men in living memory, as all men who can channel have been doomed to go insane from the taint on saidin, obviating any need for a formal instruction program, until recently.

Women who can channel fall into two categories; women who can be taught, and a far smaller group of women with the spark who will start to touch the saidar instinctively, whether they want to or not. Those of the latter group who survive this learning curve, approximately one in four, are called "wilders" if they do not seek out training once they discover what is happening.

indeed, not something you choose
did you read the books?

the three tavereen were drawn to each other by some immutable force
not matter what, their paths intersected

I didn't choose this. It just happened. Very suddenly..

I was thinking yesterday..maybe I actually died that night and all this is some Jacob's Ladder..thing.

I haven't but the next series I read, will be Wheel of Time. I've been thinking about it all year. I should just buy the books.

Channelers are not born equal; some are stronger in the Power and can handle more of it than others. Men and women who can channel are different in this respect and in many others, regarding the One Power. For example, male channellers can on average channel more of the Power than female channelers, similar to the gendered difference in physical strength.

Channelers must always be careful, as the One Power is dangerous. Besides providing an addictive stimulating effect, channelers who draw too much of the Power into themselves can kill themselves or render themselves brain-dead. If they are lucky--relatively speaking--they will only burn the ability to channel out of themselves, leaving them unable to channel ever again.

Re: Mad World
One Power

"The One Power comes from the True Source, the driving force of creation, the force the Creator made to turn the Wheel of Time. Saidin, the male half of the True Source, and saidar, the female half, work against each other, and at the same time together to provide that force.

Saidin is fouled by the touch of the Dark One, like water with a thin slick of rancid oil floating on top. The water is still pure, but it cannot be touched without touching the foulness. Only saidar is still safe to be used...
The True Source cannot be used up, any more than the river can be used up by the wheel of the mill. The Source is the river; the Aes Sedai, the waterwheel."
-Moiraine Damodred

The One Power emanates from the True Source, which is made up of two complementary parts: saidin, the male half, and saidar, the female half. People who can wield it are called channelers.

cont..

Not everyone has the ability to "channel," or access, the One Power. Most have none at all, and some only have the ability to be taught, to one degree or another. But a few channelers are born with "the spark," an innate inclination that will lead them to touch the Source whether they wish to or not.

These untrained channelers, sometimes referred to as wilders often die without ever gaining control over their innate ability by a strange sickness; some research indicates the mortality rate for untrained channelers is 75% or more. Often, however the survival comes with a price; wilders may not even know they are using the One Power to do things. They just know that sometimes, "things happen" when they want them badly enough.

hi Chris

Things are well enough. Enjoying seeing how all these things are fitting together, now that I have time to look.

The Ta'veren angle makes sense to me, and has since when another mentioned it.

Trying to get a bunch of cleaning done and may watch something light-hearted here shortly.

Maybe Gravity Falls again. Super clever show.

I have not seen the show now but Darrah has written about it a couple of times from memory. I might have to check it out after all. I was reading that in some places a fair bit of the show is censored and even a character was removed so the people watching the show, see a very different version of it.

The sandworms in Dune were inspired by the dragons of European mythology that guard some sort of treasure. Favorites of Herbert included the dragon in Beowulf which guarded a hoard of gold, and the dragon of Colchis which guarded the Golden Fleece from Jason.

A Guild Navigator was a senior rank of artificially super evolved humans within the Spacing Guild, and for many Guildsmen the pinnacle of their ambitions. Mutated through the consumption of and exposure to massive amounts of the spice Melange, Navigators are able to use a mentally conditioned and trained form of prescience to safely navigate interstellar and galactic space in long range starships called Heighliners.

Norma Cevna

The exiles reached Tupile where Norma devoted her time to the design of hyperspace ships. She was also the first pilot to experiment with the use of melange in ship steering. Leone taught her the ways of the Bene Gesserit, through which Norma would realize the navigational potential of spice-trance prescience. The computer could be replaced with a spice-heightened brain. Venport was skeptical about Leona and discouraged Cevna's association with the "witch".
[link to dune.wikia.com]
 Quoting: Seer777

Everyone needs it, everyone wants it..

Spice Melange

Effects on those who consume melange are outlined below:

Mind altering: it could awaken dormant parts of the human mind and encourage expanded sensory perceptions. In some humans (notably the Bene Gesserit, Guild Navigators, and some members of the Atreides bloodline), heavy doses led to powerful abilities that include prescience;

Health benefits: taken regularly it increased life expectancy and fortified over all health levels (in many cases life expectancy was tripled);

Addictiveness: the spice had narcotic properties, thus increasing demand and creating a large and hungry market for it. An individual's addiction to the spice would worsen the more they consumed it.

Physical effects: sustained use of the spice led to human eyes being discolored so that the entire eye would be stained blue - so called Eyes of Ibad. Extensive exposure to the spice created a huge physical dependency that could radically alter the entire body (see Guild navigators).

 Quoting: Seer777

Kwisatz Haderach

Kwisatz Haderach was a term used primarily by the Bene Gesserit. It was an old Chakobsa term that translated literally as "Shortening of the Way".

The Bene Gesserit desire to uncover this knowledge and its associated powers drove them to initiate a long-running genetic breeding program that would yield a male with mental powers capable of bridging space and time, and that he would be under direct control of the Sisterhood. The Bene Gesserit knew that, not only would their Kwisatz Haderach possess Other Memory on both the male and female side, but that he would be able to predict the future precisely. He would be Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, Mentat, and Guild Navigator, all in one being.

After the emergence of this male - Paul Atreides - the term Kwisatz Haderach was also understood as meaning "one who can be many places at once", and became synonymous with Paul.
