I was a handed a radio earlier today and told that "FRS" is a channel on radio I am allowed to utilize through FCC laws.

Family channel or some such.

I've heard enough radio over the last 2 months that I was all "Roger, affirmative..copy.. Playing along.

There are a bunch on channels..like 16(?) on FRS that can be utilized.


It was fun right up until someone else broke into our channel and the first word I heard..

Was my name. In a woman's voice.

She said my name and then said, copy.

I turned the radio off.


My partner got home and I told him what happened.

He said was it was coincidence.

No. I don't have one. The FRS is for 'family' I was told.


I was just playing along while he went to the store. He wanted to see if they worked.

It was 10 minutes into the first time I've touched a radio.

sync's should be expected when your doing the right thing.

i look at syncs as a free pass sign.

Lol we used to play around with radio channels as kids. I had a neighbor with a very large radio antenna. He was huge into CB radio. Us neighbor kids had walkie talkies and would get yelled at for going on his frequency all the time. One day we tapped into something very odd..I believe to be of a paranormal nature. We were having conversations with what we thought were people from around the neighborhood or that it was the neighbor messing with us. But he would go out of town a lot and this was also happening while he was away. The talkies would turn themselves on and scan to the station they wanted and conversations would be going. So my parents took them away and all the ~fun~ ended. This was mid/late 90s.

I was so into it..I nearly responded.

Until I realized just how bizarre it was.. about a half second later.

My name is common..but not so common that it should break into my first radio contact ever..in the first few minutes.

I'm a little weirded out by it. But that's par for the course.

Mysterious radio signal from space is repeating every 16 days Between September 16, 2018 and October 30, 2019, researchers with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment/Fast Radio Burst Project collaboration detected a pattern in bursts occurring every 16.35 days. Over the course of four days, the signal would release a burst or two each hour. Then, it would go silent for another 12 days. The signal is a known repeating fast radio burst, FRB 180916.J0158+65. Last year, the CHIME/FRB collaboration detected the sources of eight new repeating fast radio bursts, including this signal. The repeating signal was traced to a massive spiral galaxy around 500 million light-years away. Researchers hope that by tracing the origin of these mysterious bursts, they can determine what caused them. So far, they have traced single and repeating fast radio bursts back to very different sources, which deepens the mystery. The first repeating fast radio burst traced, FRB 121102, linked back to a small dwarf galaxy containing stars and metals. FRB 180916 was traced to one of the spiral arms of a Milky Way-esque galaxy. It was also within a star-forming region of the arm, the researchers said.
