Chaos magick exists in denial and belief. I weaponized denial sometime ago, while telling everyone what I was doing. If it doesn't exist it can't hurt you..is more difficult to apply than one might imagine. ‘Do you know, that there may be no Ultimate Truth?’ figures prominently on the title page of one of the main teaching documents of the Illuminates of Thanateros (see The Council of the Magi 2014, title page– thus mocking the desire of many former and con-temporaneous practitioners.30 This renunciation of the existence of ‘ultimate truth’ had two driving forces.
On the one hand, Chaos Magick practitioners generally ascribed negative effects to belief systems as ‘belief is responsible for all the limiting conditions placed on the subjective individual and therefore, in order to break free of the conditions, one must break free of belief and learn how to use it as a tool for the development of the self’ (Duggan 2014, 409). Carroll thus suggests different ‘techniques of liberation’, thereby referring to ‘those which weaken the hold of society, convention, and habit over the initiate, and those which lead to a more expansive outlook.
They are sacrilege, heresy, iconoclasm, bioaestheticism, and anathemism’ (Carroll 1987, 45–7). One the other hand, Chaos Magick was influenced by contemporaneous debates on relativism and constructivism in the social sciences.
In his essay ‘The Magic of Chaos’ Carroll argues for instance that an ‘implication of the principle of relativity of belief is that all beliefs are considered to be arbitrary and contingent.
