I don't know but I don't think nukes will be used close to the Great Lakes. I also don't think they are going to want to destroy land by making everything radioactive. Chicago could be bombed but I don't think nukes will be used.

However, if I'm wrong and Chicago is nuked I doubt that Detroit would be safe because the air and water would be contaminated. You wouldn't experience damage, but what difference would it make if you can't breathe or drink water or bathe, etc.? If it's just a "dirty bomb", then I don't think it would be as catastrophic.

I obviously wouldn't stay in Detroit. I just meant would it have any direct and immediate affects or would I hve time to GTFO of dodge.

If we're talking about the people that brought us Fukushima, the BP spill and "clean up", the "all clear" for the air quality at ground zero after 9/11, the many deteriorating nuke plants around the US on fault lines and next to dams, etc, etc, then I really don't think they'll feel bad about a nuke in Chicago.

I'm not an expert, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

At normal wind speed, you should have a few hours before fallout reaches you, I would think. Depending on wind direction, I would expect Detroit and Southern Ontario to be hit with the fallout. I would expect highways to be blocked with traffic in a Nuke scenario with people fleeing fallout. If you are in the city, I would count on traffic preventing you from getting far. May first is a Sunday, why not arrange a weekend in the country or a picnic somewhere outside of town on that day.

Assuming a westerly wind at 15mph, the fallout from a 10kt device detonated at the base of the Willis Tower would never reach Michigan. It would all be deposited into Lake Michigan. Even bumping the simulation up to a 60mph west wind, light radioactive fallout doesn't even make it to Kalamazoo. Detroit doesn't pull its water supply from Lake Michigan, so there is no immediate direct or indirect radiation threat to you there.

All of that being said, a major metropolitan area is still the last place you want to be if and when this happens. Social and economic order will begin to break down almost immediately all over the country, even areas thousands of miles away from the blast.

I would head for the UP or cross over into Windsor before they close the borders if I were you.

April 22, 2016 - Federal law enforcement investigators are searching in at least three states for more than 500 pounds of explosives stolen from a CSX train, CBS News has learned.
The CSX train was traveling from Chicago through Ohio en route to Detroit. Somewhere along the way, investigators believe the explosives were stolen.
