Sun setting late!?!?
I searched and couldn't find a thread on this subject. I own a business in ny that closes at 6pm. We have two large windows and I always feel on display when it's dark outside.

So... I'm always aware of sunset. ... it's normally totally dark at 4:30 this time of year. Well... it's still light at 5.

Has anyone else even noticed? It's just so odd.... and it's almost 70 degrees outside right now. ... Christmas eve.
wtf

I thought the same thing yesterday. It seemed like it was light longer than normal. By five darkness but last night even though we were cloudy and raining, still very light at 5:20. I'm sure others will tell us that is very normal, lol!

Because it only magically sets too late in front of your business, OP.

Re: Sun setting late!?!?
said EXACTLY the same to the missus just over half an hour ago

still residual light from the sunset illuminating the sky

i am CONVINCED based on years gone past, close to the solstice as we are, we should be in total blackness at that time

Sounds like you are in a great situation to keep a daily record of the differences between the official time and your observed time.

adjust for your location and keep a simple notebook, also be sure that you are recording the actual time of sunset and not the twilight. You know, that glowing light from the sky when the sun is below the horizon, caused by the refraction and scattering of the sun's rays from the atmosphere.

Re: Sun setting late!?!?
While December 22nd is the shortest day of the year, the evenings start to get a little longer each day starting about December the 8th. Mornings continue to get shorter until about the 8th of January. While I don't understand exactly why it happens that way, there is likely someone in the audience who does. Probably has something to do with the earth's wobble.

Re: Sun setting late!?!?
And here I feel like it's setting early.. I used to work at a store that didn't close until 6pm, so every year when the time would change it sucked because it was dark when we'd leave work, so we'd take turns leaving at 5 because it didn't get dark until 5:45.. now it's dark by 5:20
