No Problem

The list in the Appendix is rather long now and it's getting increasingly difficult to remember what's there.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that we now have the largest list of member-based smilies in GLP's 15-year history. And, it's the only one that has them organized by category.

Congratulations (and many thanks) to each one of you who is helping to make this happen!

If you duplicate one every once in a while, at least it gives those who are catching only the latest posts an opportunity to see it ... maybe for the first time.

I don't put duplicates into the same category of the actual Appendix (the first page of this thread). But, sometimes there are two sizes of the same image. And, sometimes a particular smilie easily qualifies for two different categories.


Duplicate Determination Technique

The entire Appendix is actually contained entirely within the 30 posts on the first page of this thread.
I set it up that way in order to facilitate textual smilie code searching. Here's how to do it:

1. goto the first page of this thread
2. initiate a page search with CTRL-F (CMD-F on a mac)
3. type the textual smilie code (including only the trailing colon)
4. hit the Enter key

If it's in the Appendix already, the browser will navigate to the first occurrence of the code.
Otherwise, it's not in the Appendix yet.


Keeping a List of Your Personal Favorites

GLP makes it easy to use the smilies that you've uploaded yourself as a paid member. They're right there on the Post Entry screen.

But, if you're a free member or you just want to maintain of list of your favorites that others have uploaded, there's a trick to doing just that. In fact, that's how I developed the prototype of the Appendix.

1. Find an old thread that you created.
2. Add a new post with some placeholder text, e.g., "Placeholder for Smilies."
3. Now, each time you discover a favorite, update that placeholder post with the textual smilie code.
4. Be sure to preface it with the version that includes a space after the first colon ... like we do herein.


Quick Access to Your Personal Favorites

Here's how to gain quick access to those personal favorite smilies.

1. goto your "placeholder" post
2. right-click the "#" icon at the top-right of the post
3. from the popup context menu, choose "Open in a New Tab"
4. now, save that new browser tab's url to your browser's bookmarks ... or your browser's links bar ... or to your computer's desktop (drag 'n drop the GLP icon next to the address bar).


How to Add an Extra Space in Your Post Content

The following is unrelated to the tips above, but you may find it useful in some circumstances.

When a browser displays textual content, it omits all but the first in a string of consecutive spaces. So, how can you force the browser to display two or more blank spaces?

Here's how with GLP:

1. type [space]X[space], i.e., blank space ... X ... blank space
2. now, highlight ONLY that 'X' and use the Post Editor toolbar to make the 'X' bold (that will surround it with [ b ] and [ /b ] )
3. while the 'X' is still highlighted, press-hold the ALT key and type the number key sequence 0160
4. that will replace the 'X' with a non-breaking space
5. when you submit/update the post, you'll note the extra space is there

Note, however, that you can not simply copy/paste multiple non-breaking spaces like this. Each one must be typed individually.
