Militants attack storage tanks near Libya's Ras Lanuf oil terminal
1/21/16

BENGHAZI, Libya - Suspected Islamic State militants attacked oil installations close to Libya's Ras Lanuf terminal on Thursday, an engineer at the port and energy officials said, and the group threatened more attacks.

The engineer said two storage tanks from the Harouge Oil Operations company had been set on fire near Ras Lanuf, where militants also launched attacks earlier this month.

Libya unveils UN-backed government … based in Tunisia
1/19/16

A new UN-backed Libyan government has been unveiled and tasked with uniting its warring factions, but rejection by leaders of the two existing parliaments leaves a question mark over its future.

The prime minister, Fayez Sarraj, has appointed a 32-member cabinet tasked with ending the civil war, stemming immigration to Europe and halting the expansion of Islamic State. But for now the new government of national accord is based in a hotel in Tunis, capital of neighbouring Tunisia, after Libya was deemed too unsafe.

Mayor Mohammed Eshtawi briefed municipal members about the formation of the new cabinet. They agreed to hold in-depth meetings with the city's Shura Council and civil society institutions to further discuss the new cabinet to make sure it achieves greater efficiency to lead the stage, a gesture of their reservation about the cabinet.
Misrata Municipality is seen as a big supporter of Skhirat agreement.

U.S. and Allies Said to Plan Military Action on ISIS in Libya
1/22/16

While no decision has been finalized about when the United States and its allies will formally expand action in Libya against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, administration officials indicated that it might be very soon. A decision probably will come in “weeks” but “not hours,” Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Friday.

“It’s fair to say that we’re looking to take decisive military action against ISIL in conjunction with the political process” in Libya, General Dunford said. “The president has made clear that we have the authority to use military force.”

The daily also said French troops are expected to arrive soon for the same purpose.

The officers and soldiers are currently stationed in Jamal Abdulnasir military base south of Tobruk where the parliament is holding its sessions in the city.

War and strife have cost Libya $68bn in lost oil revenues
1/24/16

Libya has forgone more than $68bn in potential oil revenues since 2013 amid a power struggle between rival factions that has brought the energy industry to a near standstill and wrecked the economy.
The estimate by the Tripoli-based National Oil Corporation (NOC) accounts for the value of lost production as a result of 75 separate oilfield shutdowns and port disruptions.

It offers another measure of the missed opportunity and dysfunction plaguing Libya since the downfall of Muammer Gaddafi in 2011 and the battle between two competing governments.

Libya: Civilian Toll Mounts in Benghazi
1/24/16

The current conflict raging in Benghazi, in eastern Libya, since July 2014, has displaced thousands of residents as a result of indiscriminate attacks on residential areas, killing civilians and damaging hospitals and other buildings, particularly in the downtown area.
The forces and militias fighting in the area include those aligned under the Karama (Dignity) military campaign, which has the support of the government and House of Representatives based in al-Bayda and Tobruk, one of two governments claiming legitimacy in Libya. These forces are fighting Islamist militias, including the Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shura Council (BRSC) and the extremist group, Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

Libyan human rights chief flees to Britain after abduction ordeal
1/24/16

A senior lawyer for Libya's official human rights watchdog has fled to Britain after militiamen linked to the country's new government waged a terrifying campaign of intimidation against him and his staff.
Faraj Alajeeli, 40, was abducted for 30 hours by masked gunmen who beat him up, urinated on him, and warned him "never to talk about human rights again". Islamists also sent death threats to his house in Tripoli, threatening to kill him as an "unbeliever".
The father-of-four, whose organisation worked closely with Britain's Foreign Office, eventually smuggled himself out of Libya and sought asylum in Britain in November.

200 Moroccans heading to Libya detained at Algier airport; Possibility of Islamic State recruits being considered

More than 200 Moroccans are halted by the Algerian authorities after there has been an unusual increase in the quantity of Moroccans trying to cross. Moreover, the Moroccan envoy was called and summoned to give an explanation regarding this crossing to Libya.

Couple hundred of Moroccans were detained on the Algiers airport on Saturday night after Algerian authorities observed an anomaly in their increase according to Reuters. There has been no information regarding the charges or reasons on why these Moroccans are being held. But nonetheless, it is speculated that diplomatic relations between the Algeria and Morocco are being considered due to their regional influence and cooperation. It should be noted that Libya is a regional concern after the Islamic State militants have gained the ground for their operations and now has called for foreign recruits from the North Africa.

Tripoli PM Khalifa Ghwell’s ministry of defence has issued a general mobilisation in Libya Dawn areas, which includes restrictions on the movements of diplomats and other foreigners.

The announcement appears to have been issued on Friday, a day after Ghwell promised to double the salaries of militiamen.

Delusional Gen Haftar: Benghazi liberation within days; Sirte and Derna are next
1/24/16

In one of his latest hallucinations, renegade General Khalifa Haftar said Benghazi liberation is imminent, declaring that the city is now almost safe.
"Just a few days left for the liberation of Benghazi which has nearly become a hundred percent secure." He said in a speech to pro-tribal leaders and eastern mayors in Al-Marij of Saturday.
He added that the battle for the liberation of Sirte will start shortly after the liberation of Benghazi and Derna.
Derna has been already liberated from IS groups by the Shura Council of Derna in less than a week of fighting, but according to Haftar's classification, all anti-Dignity Operation groups are terrorists.

Gen. Dunford wants 'decisive military action' against ISIS in Libya
1/25/16

President Barack Obama's top military adviser has begun to talk openly about stepped-up U.S. military action against ISIS in Libya as the terror group expands its operations in the North African country.

The U.S. wants to "take decisive military action" to "check" ISIS in Libya, while still supporting the political process to form a functioning government, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters while traveling in Europe.

U.S. military reconnaissance flights over Libya and covert intelligence-gathering missions are now focusing sharply on tracking and locating ISIS's growing presence in that country, according to a senior defense official.

Libya plans to propose a new unity government within 10 days
1/26/16

Libya plans to propose a new unity government within 10 days, after the internationally recognized parliament rejected a unity government on Monday, proposed under a United Nations-backed plan to resolve the country’s political crisis.

According to a government official, the revamped government will be smaller unlike the the rejected one which had 32 ministers.

Still, the internationally recognized parliament will have to vote for this new government.

It will also be an uphill task to balance the new smaller government among different regions and multiple political groups in the country.

Re: Libya Updates 6/12/17
The U.S. Intervention in Libya Was Such a Smashing Success That a Sequel Is Coming
1/27/16

The immediate aftermath of the NATO bombing of Libya was a time of high gloating. Just as Iraq War advocates pointed to the capture and killing of Saddam Hussein as proof that their war was a success, Libya war advocates pointed to the capture and brutal killing of Muammar el-Qaddafi as proof of their vindication. War advocates such as Anne-Marie Slaughter and Nicholas Kristof were writing columns celebrating their prescience and mocking war opponents as discredited, and the New York Times published a front-page article declaring: “U.S. Tactics in Libya May be a Model for Other Efforts.” It was widely expected that Hillary Clinton, one of the leading advocates for and architects of the bombing campaign, would be regarded as a Foreign Policy Visionary for the grand Libya success: “We came, we saw, he died,” Clinton sociopathically boasted about the mob rape and murder of Qaddafi while guffawing on 60 Minutes.

Since then, Libya — so predictably — has all but completely collapsed, spending years now drowning in instability, anarchy, fractured militia rule, sectarian conflict, and violent extremism. The execution of Saddam Hussein was no vindication of that war nor a sign of improved lives for Iraqis, and the same was true for the mob killing of Qaddafi. As I wrote the day after Qaddafi fled Tripoli and Democratic Party loyalists were prancing around in war victory dances: “I’m genuinely astounded at the pervasive willingness to view what has happened in Libya as some sort of grand triumph even though virtually none of the information needed to make that assessment is known yet, including: how many civilians have died, how much more bloodshed will there be, what will be needed to stabilize that country, and, most of all, what type of regime will replace Qaddafi? …

There they go again: US mulls anti-ISIS operations in ‘liberated’ Libya
1/27/16

The US is “closely monitoring” the situation in Libya, and it is “too soon to say exactly where things will evolve,” Defense Department spokesman Peter Cook told reporters Wednesday, acknowledging for the first time that US military personnel were recently present in the north African country.

There have been some US forces in Libya, trying to establish contact with forces on the ground” to get a clear idea of what the situation, and evaluate who might be “worthy of US support” in the impending struggle against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) extremists, Cook said.

Earlier this week, General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US wanted to “take decisive military action” against IS in Libya, in order to “put a fire wall” between them and other terror groups operating in Africa. The decision on the plan, which would involve NATO allies like the UK, France and Italy, will be made in “weeks,” Dunford said, according to the official military newspaper Stars and Stripes.

When I read bewildering statements like this.....Has not the US intelligence agencies been doing their homework? Did the US completely abandon their intelligence gathering efforts in Libya and cut all their contacts after the US Ambassador was killed? Good Grief!

Not to mention that they probably already know who they want to throw their weight behind, and NO DOUBT have their people running all over Libya as we speak.

Washington (AFP) - The United States has not decided whether to launch military action in Libya, where the Islamic State group is exploiting political instability to expand its operations, Pentagon chief Ashton Carter said Thursday.

Washington is "developing options for what we might do in the future," Carter told reporters.

But he added: "We're watching the situation very carefully, and there's a lot going on there right now. But we haven't made any decisions to take military action there."

Libyans fear military intervention could set country ablaze

IS already controls a stretch of coastline around the central city of Sirte, and has launched assaults against Libya’s main oil terminals at Ras Lanuf and Sidra, prompting speculation that the US and its allies could step up their involvement in the fight against a group which they are already bombing in Syria and Iraq.

Libya’s national oil company (NOC) has also called for an intervention to protect strategic areas of the country including the oil terminals.

Ibrahim Bate el Mal, a spokesperson for the Misrata military council, told Middle East Eye that officials were already talking to US, French and Italian military contacts.
