4.7 and 4.8 earthquakes Back to Back Plus a Swarm Continues in Fairview, Oklahoma

The swarm includes several earthquakes in the 3 range and another 4.0.

I saw an article recently that says they are discovering new and developing fault lines in Oklahoma. I will see if I can find it.

Whole lotta shaking going on!

I live in Yukon and felt it for almost 2 minutes. Shook the couch and the house was a little creaky. One of these days it's gonna be a big one, and most of Oklahoma will fall apart. We're not prepared for earthquakes.

Experts work to determine what's causing all the earthquakes

Oklahoma Geological Survey experts at the University of Oklahoma are working closely with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to figure out what’s causing all the earthquakes in areas where injection wells are not located.

"Director Jeremy Boak and his staff said the tremors have brought to light new fault lines that had not yet been discovered."


“We’ve been working hard to delineate as many faults as we can in Oklahoma," he said. "We’ve issued a map and we know there are gaps because it’s difficult to find the faults when they don’t break all the way to the surface."

I tend to to think that while fracking is contributing to some of the smaller more randomly placed earthquakes, it is not to blame for the majority. Fairview and Edmond especially have seen a large increase in the number and size of earthquakes they have because they are on/close to a fault line. I think the fault line has just never been active before, and now it's going crazy.

Everyone in my city 3-4 hours away from Fairview seemed to feel it strongly. I was exhausted, in bed and out like a light so once again I felt nothing.

But get this:

Once a month I clean all the dust bunnies in the corners of my walls from ceiling to floor. I live on the end of an 8 unit apartment building (all ground floor, 4 on each side of building).

Last I did this was just before Christmas. Two days ago I noticed cracks in the paint on the place where west and south walls meet- all the way up the seam!

A couple of months ago the water lines broke in my building.

I think our foundation to the building is being affected by all these quakes.

My sister moved back here from years of living in California and was in the Big One in the late 80's or early 90's (forgot the name). She says she can hear them coming more than feel them and she thinks these past 24 hours are a pre-cursor to a much bigger one.

Incidentally, she is one of few around here who have purchased earthquake insurance for her home and it's only about $80 a year- or was until all these quakes have started.

If you own here, I'd definitely see about purchasing insurance. It's only going to get worse, IMO.

Yeah, we bought our house about 2 years ago. Since then there are cracks in 2 of the bedroom, the living room, and the kitchen. They weren't there when we did the inspection but I just noticed them about 4 months ago. I think they are from the earthquakes as well. I don't know if we have insurance that covers that or not, I will have to tell my husband to make sure it does.

Please do and soon. The past couple of years insurance adjusters were not paying claims because they said they couldn't prove that the quakes weren't related to fracking.

But recently their decision was overturned by the argument that they couldn't prove otherwise, either.

At any rate, once your foundation's gone, you're pretty much toast.

And these were in a part of Oklahoma that don't usually get them.

"In 2015, 907 quakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater were reported in Oklahoma, up from 584 in 2014, according to KFOR-TV.

There were only 42 such earthquakes in the state in 2010 and 1 such tremor in 2005.

According to the USGS, there have been 29 such earthquakes already in 2016, the most recent being a preliminary magnitude-3.3 tremor near Fairview at 12:34 p.m. Thursday."

2015 was also when we got a 5.3. That's getting pretty big for us, if you ask me.

I remember seeing cracks in the sheetrock of our house in Tulsa after the 5.6 that hit a few years ago. Our foundation was already getting cracks from the clay soil. I'm back in Texas now.

I live in Fairview. Our house was rocking and rolling last night. The earthquakes are still happening.

All the major news stations came to our little town today. It was interesting.
