Strong and Shallow Earthquake M6.4 (revised, it was M6.9) - 233km SE of Sarangani, Philippines (21094 people living within 100 km)

A very strong and shallow earthquake registered by Geoscience Australia as M6.8 hit off the coast of Talaud Islands, Indonesia at 16:38 UTC on January 11, 2016. The agency is reporting a depth of 29 km (18 miles). USGS is reporting M6.4 at a depth of 12.9 km (8.0 miles).

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 233 km (145 miles) SE of Sarangani, Philippines and 265 km (165 miles) NNW of Tobelo, Indonesia.

There are about 21 094 people living within 100 km (62 miles) radius.

USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are nonductile reinforced concrete frame and concrete/cinder block masonry construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
