Sandpoint Idaho: Mayor drops plan to bring in Syrian refugees

A surprising twist in Sandpoint refugee plan

It was another packed house during the resolution hearing, but there were no plans to take public comment. It came as a big surprise to people at the meeting.
SANDPOINT, Idaho -

In a surprise move, Sandpoint Mayor Shelby Rognstad withdrew a controversial plan that would have allowed Syrian refugees to seek solace in Sandpoint. Mayor Rognstad cited the resolution being too controversial to move forward.

It was another packed house during the resolution hearing, but there were no plans to take public comment. It came as a big surprise to people at the meeting.

When the plan was announced two weeks ago, community members spent two hours going back and forth on the issue during a meeting.

Wednesday's meeting took less than half an hour, ending as soon at the Mayor pulled his support.

Sandpoint Mayor withdraws controversial resolution

....

"Mayor Shelby Rognstad said he brought forth the resolution in an effort to reaffirm Sandpoint's values of being a tolerant, diverse, and non-discriminatory city. But, he said, the resolution unfortunately just created division within the community.

"My intent was to affirm our human values as a community," Rognstad said. "Sandpoint has shown that it is a community that values compassion and religious and ethnic tolerance. I believe the City of Sandpoint and your elected representatives you see before you value these principles historically and they continue today. Unfortunately, and to the surprise of many of us here, this resolution has only served to divide us."

Earlier in the month, the city council tabled a motion about bringing in Syrians.

Sandpoint City Council tables vote over refugee debate

SANDPOINT, Idaho – Members of the Sandpoint City Council were expected to vote Wednesday night on a “human rights and non-discrimination resolution” that would welcome refugees into the city.

The council voted Wednesday night to change some of the wording in resolution and then table it. Some of the changes included removing references about Nazi Germany among other things. The resolution will be brought back up for discussion at the next meeting in two weeks.

The resolution was from incoming Mayor Shelby Rognstad. It said the recent events in Paris and San Bernardino have “saddened the community and have caused the fear level in our country and city to rise.” In the resolution it states that Sandpoint would welcome anyone who is properly screened by authorities. They want the city to "remain a tolerant, diverse and non-discriminatory," according to the resolution.

"I wouldn't have brought this forth unless we saw that kind of opposition in this community," said Mayor Rognstad. "I thought that given the historic reputation that this area has had over the years of racism, I thought that it was important for the city of Sandpoint to show that that doesn't represent who we are in this community."

This guy was in office for only a few weeks when he started to implement The Agenda.

You folks in Sandpoint better duck, he has Agenda 21 aimed right at you. Or worse yet, Agenda 2030

Thanks for posting OP, its good to hear. But as an Idahoan you should know that they are, and have been here for some time. All the feel good talk from your mayor dont change the fact that Otter sold us down the river before this mess even started. What they are really telling you is that they gonna take the money from the feds and not tell you a damn thing cuz what you don't know won't hurt him...
