Warning: Microsoft Edge has no real private browsing
For you Winderz users:

General:
Edge now uses an ESE database. It stores all the usual stuff: cookies, history, HTTP POST request header packets and downloads.

A few things caught my attention:
1) The Container_n tables, which contain the most relevant information(web sites visited, cookie details, cache file entries) will be synced across devices if you are logged into Microsoft. That is, all of your browsing history is synced across all devices - every website visited in Microsoft Edge will be detailed in this ESE database, along with the date the website was visited. Perhaps this is pretty standard for anyone logging in to a major service (Microsoft, Google, etc) these days. So, many people use incognito windows when on a public computer or the like right? What if you were to use Edge...
2) InPrivate Browsing (aka PrivacIE): the websites visited while running in PrivacIE mode are still stored in the same IE/Edge WebCacheV01.dat ESE database!

how can you build a database to control

Re: Warning: Microsoft Edge has no real private browsing
Solution:

DON'T USE EDGE...and don't log into microsoft, google, etc.

I have several laptops, 2 tablets, phone, etc. One is a chromebook. I actually love it. But I almost always am logged out of my google account when I browse, and am very careful with what is and isn't synced.

Agreed. I'm never signed into anything for an extended period of time. I generally don't use cloud services and don't sync much of anything... although I'm trying to wean off syncing contacts through Google with my phone etc. It drives me nuts.
I'm experimenting with VM's running Linux / Tails etc along with a solid VPN.

Just a reminder - it doesn't matter what you do on your device....the ISP's know exactly where you've been.

I don't use Windows... It's the new browser replacing Internet Explorer, so I would imagine Win 10 yes.

OK. Explain how that keeps your ISP out of the loop? Don't they know you've connected to it?

It's a virtual private tunnel of encrypted data - they can't see squat. You have this encrypted data stream to the VPN provider which forwards you to your destination. The 'proxy' could be anywhere in the world. This is why people use them a lot for accessing websites that your ISP is blocking, or accessing services not available in your country. Good VPN providers don't log any data, etc.
Search for info on it. There are some good high level explanations on how VPN's work.

ok. but how do you connect to the VPN? Don't you still need an ISP just to have the internet connection?

(I'm really serious - I've never been able to understand VPN's for some reason)

No problem:
You still need your ISP. You usually download the VPN client from the business you buy it from (It should support OpenVPN). You fire up the VPN client application. This client uses your ISP connection to create the tunnel to the VPN servers. Then *all* of your internet connection is 'tunneled' through the VPN, safe from prying eyes. I've been researching which VPN to go with... it's a tough choice! A friend of mine uses PIA (Private Internet Access) and is happy with it. I may go with something that's not in a 'fourteen eyes' country.

Yes, it looks like Windows 10 is quite guilty of scraping and storing a lot of information while we sleep.
