Are you aware that in 2010 the AAP suggested that US doctors should be allowed to circumcise girls? All because they believed having it performed in a medical setting (which some are in FGM practicing countries) would be 'safer' and would alleviate the negative view of the practice.

the Foreskin should be considered an organ since it has at least two major functions: Mechanical-rolling bearing & size stretch and primary sensory.
Known functions are protective, immunological, and sexual.

The foreskin contains between 10,000-20,000 highly specialized nerve endings and several feet of blood vessels.

The entire intact penis may contain around 24,000 nerves, with only 4,000 or so remaining after circumcision.

The head of the penis (glans) is meant to be an internal organ, like the tongue and eyeball.

Without the protection of the foreskin, like the lips and eyelid, the penis builds up a layer of calloused skin (keratinization) for protection.

Female Genital Mutilation is removal of the clitoris, or sewing of the labia so it fuses together.

I have issues with people performing unnecessary surgery on non-consenting minors, yes. I support equality for males and females- neither should have their genitals forcibly altered.

There is NO consent with the child. And no, not all circumcisions in the US are performed in hospitals. Some are done in clinics, some on homes, and some in churches. And there are NO laws/policies in the US regarding male circumcision- it is an outdated practice that has been 'grandfathered' in. Most boys do not receive any pain relief whatsoever.

And we are not all men on this thread. I'm a woman who wants other women to consider what we have permitted as OK in the US while looking at other countries and judging their cultural practices. The reason why we have to bring up MGM whenever FGM is brought up is because of our huge hypocrisy around the issue.

We cannot continue to say FGM is wrong when we still support and practice MGM.

40 years ago, my father did not want me to get circumcised, my mother agreed that it should be the father's choice though she had the "hygiene bias" (if a woman can keep her internal organs hygienic, a man can certainly clean under his foreskin), there was so much pressure from hospital staff that made them read biased literature and talked of locker room mockery that my parents relented. That is media bias, pure and simple.

Cutting off part of a child for any reason other than to save its life is wrong, period. End of argument.
