The nanos, originally designed for medical or war purposes, get out of hand. It drives the universe to a brink of extinction. As with any large wipe out, a lot of information is lost because the arts suffer as people are focussed on survival and not recording data. With scarce targets, the nanos lose their primary goal and must adapt to survive. Instead of destroying life, they live with it. All the time destroying it is adequate to interface with people. For a time things are good, life flourishes with the nanos. The nanos now have a way of life that ensured one of their objectives: survival. As life grows, not only the nanos adapt. Some people do as well. These people within their very DNA are able to interface with the nanos to varying extent. Emotions and levels of inner peace/rage are so important to "the force" just as they can produce varying effects in the human body, to control them whether for dark side or light side is important to control the force. Alternative view: the nanos were designed to interface with people originally and create "the force" but in secret as any invention is kept secret. Afterall, what greater invention than to make such power real. They abandoned the project because they failed, or so the designers thought. Being self replicating, these nanos got out, but with little to no ill effect. Most didn't realize they were there, nobody knew they existed. Fast forward (see above) to adaptations, or perhaps the nanos were only designed (flawed) to interact with certain very rare life/DNA non-specific to a species. The scientific possibility is there. |

A painful time for humanity when Maldek was destroyed.
