Confused about a bible teaching - Can't serve God and Mammon.
If I apply logic and reason to this teaching, that would mean that one must be homeless without a job to not be serving money. Everything we do in society serves money. We work for a paycheck to pay for rent and bills and food. We are all slaves to money if we work and use it for our daily activities. So do I really have to become homeless to truly be with God?

And If you say, well working a 9-5 and supporting a family and not lavish spending the money, is not serving money, just serving a purpose.... your still serving money.

Quite a predicament.

unless its all rubbish

why do you have to think in extremes? balance is the message
give unto Caesar what is Cesar - (money) meaning work, and trade for the things that are needed ...
Give unto God what is Gods - (soul) meaning spiritually develop to get to know God in your time ...

OP mammon basically means material things not just money... what it means is what are you living for i.e. what to you take pleasure in? Where is your heart? If your heart is on earthly things there will your treassure be also, and you will detest Christ and spiritual things.

Mammon is a spirit associated with money. It is not money itself. With that being said, most early Christians sold all of their possessions and left society completely to live in cave cities they built in the wilderness.

according to strongs: it essentially means "wealth" or "avarice" which would be understood best as defined by websters 1828 dictionary accordingly:

Wealth

WEALTH, noun

1. Prosperity; external happiness.

2. Riches; large possessions of money, goods or land; that abundance of worldly estate which exceeds the estate of the greater part of the community; affluence; opulence.

Each day new wealth without their care provides.

Avarice

AV'ARICE, noun [Latin avaritia, from avarus, from aveo, to covet.]

An inordinate desire of gaining and possessing wealth; covetousness; greediness or insatiable desire of gain.

Avarice sheds a blasting influence over the finest affections and sweetest comforts of mankind.

you also cant serve America or the constitution..and any of the myriad of groups that have been allowed to grow within the us...like major corporations, banks, unions, ngo's, cia, nsa, dhs, the military the police, the bar, fraternities, medical groups, free masons etc etc etc, anything that asks you for loyalty that is counter the constitution, even a little is proof of their betrayal

So the point is yes, you can still work 9-5 w/e to support your family and its not sin, if you are doing so in accordance to the will of God, i.e. in putting them before you, making sure their provided for etc, so that God is ultimately glorified.

Even if you didn't have family. The Bible says we're to work with our hands and if we don't work we're not entitled to have food to eat, so work is technically an ordinance of God.

Again it's about why do you do what you do, and what do you treasure most.

and P.S. you can most definitely trust that the Bible is the inerrant, inspired, infallible Word of God; just keep praying to God for faith, discernment, and understanding and proving it and you will likewise know in time.

God bless my friend

OP, go to google images and look up mammon. It is this 'thing' that we are not to worship. Money is a tool for us all. If you are blessed with abundance then you are to help those who cannot help themselves. The more of God's blessings that you pour onto others the more that will come to you.

You are a blessing to be a blessing.

Money is a tool.

If you're selling yourself short for a few dollars, you're doing it wrong.
For example: making money off of war/death

Re: Confused about a bible teaching - Can't serve God and Mammon.
14The Pharisees, who loved silver, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15He said to them, ďYou are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in Godís sight.

It's like also the parable of the rich man who wanted to justify himself.
The response from the disciples to Jesus's statement that he needed to 'sell his possessions' was WHO THEN CAN BE SAVED.?
This has nothing to do with earthly wealth, and their astonished question focuses on one thing only - that what Jesus was actually stating was that they were justifying themselves through something and they needed to sell it....

If it is God who justifies man....and man is convinced that he can justify himself.....wouldn't the natural question be Who then can be saved if someone comes along telling them to sell what they were justifying themselves through?

Re: Confused about a bible teaching - Can't serve God and Mammon.
It's all about intent and balance

For example you can make it primary goal to obtain money, and put this goal above serving God.

Or you can have the intent to use a portion of the wealth, to serve God and help others and your family. The money can be used to pay for training, so you can then serve an help others.

In both the OT and NT, people donated a portion of their possessions to help others.

So remember the intent and find a balance.
